John Denton of the Florida Today reports: Standout forward Grant Hill dressed for the Orlando Magic's game against Charlotte Saturday night but did not play because of a sprained left foot he suffered a night earlier.

The injury is to the same foot that needed two surgeries to repair and kept Hill out of 78 games last season. X-rays taken before the game were negative, and the Magic hope that Hill will be back in the starting lineup Monday when they host the Detroit Pistons.

Hill injured his foot in the fourth quarter of Friday's win in Charlotte. He came out of the game, took his shoe off and had trainers look at the foot. He still had plenty of soreness in the foot Saturday and, after going through some light pregame shooting drills, he decided not to play.

Hill played all eight preseason games and each of the first 13 games without pain in his ankle. With his explosive first step still missing, Hill's scoring average has dropped to 17 points a game. Magic coach Doc Rivers was even critical of Hill two games ago, saying his play was too passive.

"Missing that first step is a function of being out a year," Rivers said. "I really believe it's going to take half a season before he gets back to being the old Grant Hill. It's got to be difficult for him because he's used to being Grant Hill. You see that explosion from him at times, but you don't see it the whole game."

Mike Miller started in place of Hill Saturday night and had 21 points in the first half.
