After so many losses, there was bound to be a breaking point.

In front of 14,051 at Gund Arena, the Heat self-destructed for its eighth consecutive loss, 100-96, and the worst 12-game start since the Heat's inaugural season (1988-89), when Miami started 0-12.

With Washington's victory Saturday over Boston, the Heat is alone in last place in the Atlantic Division.

Miami scored only seven points in the extra period.

``I thought our defense was better, coach Pat Riley said. ``We took a step forward tonight in effort. But we keep digging ourselves out of holes. This group of guys is not used to it, they're not used to the kind of effort that it's going to take just to give yourself a chance to win.

``We're going to have to bring this effort every night in order to get over the hump.

Eddie Jones, who led the Heat with 27 points and 13 rebounds, hit his biggest shot of the season with six seconds left in regulation, sinking a three-pointer to tie the score at 89 and help send the game to overtime.
