Insiders suggest if the Cavaliers really want to land marquee can didate Jeff Van Gundy as their new head coach, they'll have to really prove it - by granting him more power over team personnel than any sideline boss in team history.

The sources say while Van Gundy has expressed interest in coaching the Cavs, they see no logical way the former New York Knicks boss would actually accept the Cleveland job without receiving "Butch Davis" power: the ability, like the Browns head coach, to have major say over who plays (and who doesn't).

Recent Cavs head coaches Randy Wittman and John Lucas, both hired by current General Manager Jim Paxson, had little power in shaping the roster. That all fell to Paxson, who has lived up to the task magnificently: He's produced one of the losingest career records for a general manager in NBA history.
