The city of San Francisco has rejected a plan proposed by the Golden State Warriors to bring as many as 9,000 fans back to games via an ambitious testing plan.

The Warriors had been working on the plan over the past eight months.

“I cannot approve a plan for live audiences at indoor sporting events at this time,” San Francisco Health Official Tomas Aragón wrote in the letter, dated Nov. 14. “Indoor sports with spectators are not currently allowed under the State of California’s COVID-19 restrictions. Moreover, and more importantly, San Francisco is experiencing a rapid and significant surge in COVID-19 cases.”

Aragón subsequently wrote that he was “willing to start working with (the Warriors) on a plan to permit spectators at 25% capacity” when San Francisco returns to the state’s yellow tier.
