Warriors Sign Karl To 10-Day Contract

Jan 31, 2010 3:26 PM

The Golden State Warriors have signed guard Coby Karl to a 10-day contract, the team announced Sunday.

Karl, 26, is a free agent call-up from the NBA Development League's Idaho Stampede, where he has averaged 27.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.60 steals and 40.6 minutes in five games since joining the team earlier this month.

A 6-5, 215-pound guard who went undrafted out of Boise State in 2007, Karl began the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, appearing in three games before being waived on January 6.

His previous NBA playing experience came as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2007-08 campaign, when he averaged 1.8 points in 17 contests.

Jackson: Trade Has Been Great For Me

Jan 30, 2010 10:32 AM

Bobcats guard Stephen Jackson has no regrets about forcing a trade out of Golden State earlier this season.

Jackson was fined roughly $165,000 for "conduct detrimental to the team" and going public with his trade demand.

"Where I'm at now is great, it's definitely been good for me," Jackson said Friday before Charlotte faced the Warriors.

Jackson was booed heartily by fans in Golden State, but he responded with 17 points in the first half.

"I'm getting a lot of satisfaction out of knowing that I'm helping this organization come close to getting into the playoffs," Jackson said of the Bobcats.

Study: Clippers, Warriors Have NBA's Most Loyal Fans

Jan 28, 2010 11:28 AM

A study designed for The Wall Street Journal by sports-reference.com looked at NBA teams' attendance for the past 10 seasons. It then weighed certain factors like city population, arena capacity, prior winning percentage and whether there are other, competing teams in the same market.

By those measures, Clippers fans are the most devoted, while Golden State Warriors fans are in second place.

Presumably those teams get extra credit for continuing to post relatively strong attendance figures while sporting a combined winning percentage of .399 since the 2000-01 season.

The Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks, who lead the league in fans per game, round out the study's top five, while the Lakers come in sixth. In last place are the Philadelphia 76ers, just ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves and New Jersey Nets.

"Unfortunately, you can't have a hostile takeover of a basketball team," Ellison said.

Nellie Doesn't Want To Retire After Season

Jan 26, 2010 10:52 AM

Don Nelson disputed claims from Stephen Jackson that he will retire after the 2009-10 season.

"After Coach Nelson gets his record, he's going to hang it up,'' Jackson said on Monday. "I just know that he's going to the (Warriors) office and pass the reins to (assistant coach) Keith Smart.''

"I'm going to coach until my contract is up next year,'' Nelson said in a phone interview. "Ask Jack if he's going to leave with one year left on his contract. ... I'm going to honor my contract next year and then that will be it.''

Warriors Won't Trade Ellis

Jan 26, 2010 10:34 AM

The Warriors have no intent to trade Monta Ellis, according to multiple team sources.

"We're in a situation where we need to look very strongly at change," general manager Larry Riley said. "Whether it's by Feb. 18 (trade deadline) or in the offseason, we're in a situation where we're going to have to make a change here."

The Warriors have some $12 million in expiring contracts on their roster, something they can use to improve their team.

"I have never been told to try to go save money," Riley said. "I've been told to try to improve this basketball team. I do feel like I will get something done."

Don Nelson gave a laughing response when asked on Monday if the Warriors might deal Ellis to Boston for Ray Allen.

Warriors Don't Know How Long Ellis Will Be Out

Jan 24, 2010 5:43 PM

Warriors guard Monta Ellis will have his sprained right ankle evaluated before the club reveals the injury's significance.

Golden State announced Friday night that X-rays were negative and suggested the injury is not serious.

There are different theories as to when Ellis suffered the injury, but it appears to have been during the first half of Friday's game against New Jersey.

Ellis is averaging 26.1 points, 5.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds this season.

Gamble On Jackson Paying Off For Bobcats

Jan 24, 2010 5:31 PM

Looking to make their first-ever playoff appearance, the Bobcats took a gamble when they traded for Stephen Jackson on Nov. 17.

Charlotte general manager Rod Higgins pulled the trigger on the deal, hoping that Jackson would be a veteran leader for the team's young roster.

"I just said, 'Stephen, let's just try to treat this like a situation kind of like the one you just got out of, where you helped that (Warriors) club that hadn't been to the postseason in quite a few years get there,' " Higgins said of what he told Jackson following the deal. " 'Come help this young ballclub, and we'll provide you with what you need.'

"With Larry [Brown] and Michael [Jordan] and myself, we could manage him if we allowed the communication to be wide open. There's a risk in any trade you do, but he's what our team needed: another playmaker, another guy you could count on to score night in and night out. I thought it was the perfect fit."

The Bobcats were 3-6 at the time of the deal and they sit at 21-21 through Saturday night's action.

"With all situations, only time will tell," Higgins said. "You give (Jackson) the benefit of the doubt, continue to work with him and with us as a group and continually try to improve the team and get to that point where we're considered a very good team."
