Kevin Martin Retires After 12 NBA Seasons

Nov 27, 2016 2:36 PM

Kevin Martin has announced his retirement from the NBA.

Martin spent last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the San Antonio Spurs. Martin played 12 years total in the league, most notably with the Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets.

"My family and close friends have known since June of the direction I wanted my life to go. Those were the toughest conversations that I have ever had but with the ultimate support I knew I was making the right decision," Martin wrote in the advertisement published in his local newspaper in Ohio.

Martin was traded by the Rockets to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the James Harden trade.

Rockets Pull Latest Offer To Donatas Motiejunas

Nov 25, 2016 12:19 PM

The Houston Rockets have pulled their most recent contract offer to Donatas Motiejunas.

Motiejunas, meanwhile, is "surprised and upset" that no deal has been struck nearly five months after free agency began.

Motiejunas remains a restricted free agent. If Motiejunas elects to play in a foreign league this season, he would remain a restricted free agent.

The Rockets were offering a two-year deal starting in the $7 million range but with only the first season fully guaranteed.

Motiejunas' camp is convinced the Rockets have undervalued him and has been trying to generate interest from rival teams that possess cap space.

Donatas Motiejunas, Rockets Haven't Held Any New Talks

Nov 16, 2016 12:11 AM

Donatas Motiejunas and the Houston Rockets continue their stalemate in restricted free agency.

The two sides have not conducted any new negotiations as the Rockets continue to offer a deal starting at $7 million.

With Patrick Beverley returning this week, Mike D'Antoni was asked about the Rockets' roster being whole finally.

"Almost," D'Antoni said. "We still have Motiejunas out there. I think we'll have to pick him up in Canada somewhere."

Motiejunas is training in Vancouver as the Rockets have already played 10 games.

James Harden: Thunder Now A One-Man Show

Nov 16, 2016 2:08 PM

James Harden was asked about the state of the Oklahoma City Thunder this season following the departure of Kevin Durant, which came roughly a week after their trade of Serge Ibaka and almost four years after his own trade from the franchise.

Without Durant to share shots with, Westbrook's usage has increased dramatically.

"It's Russ," said Harden. "It's a one-man show."

The Houston Rockets play Russell Westbrook and the Thunder on Wednesday for the first time this season.

Harden and Westbrook are each posting more than 30 points, eight rebounds and nearly 10 assists per game so far this season.

James Harden: I'm Having A Blast This Season

Nov 15, 2016 11:04 AM

James Harden and Russell Westbrook are having excellent individual seasons, scoring, passing and rebounding for their respective teams.

"I'm having a blast to be able to create, get guys open shots and just make my teammates better," said Harden in a postgame interview on NBA.com when asked about his new role this season.

With the Rockets playing Westbrook and the Thunder this week, Harden was asked about the season his former teammates is having.

"Russ is unnormal. I call him a created player," said Harden. "It seems like he never gets tired, he's everywhere. He's so athletic. I've been on Russell since I was 10 years old at Boys and Girls clubs. He's just doing things people said you couldn't do. He's playing at an all-time level right now."

Patrick Beverley Expected To Soon Return From Left Knee Surgery

Nov 12, 2016 9:38 PM

Patrick Beverley is nearing his season debut as he recovers from left knee surgery.

"I feel very good, excited, can't wait to play," Beverley said Saturday. "I can't wait to play with my teammates. I missed them a lot. I missed being on the road and team camaraderie a lot. I missed playing basketball and missed competing."

Beverley said he won't be limited in his return and has done some physical contact during his workouts and his lone practice.

The Rockets have started Eric Gordon and Corey Brewer alongside James Harden in the backcourt.

"I've been working out with three trainers here when the guys have been on the road, and I practiced (Friday) and competed at a high level," Beverley said. "I did one-on-one and a lot of contact stuff. I'm ready. I'm excited to get back out there and compete."

Ray Allen Didn't Expect To Retire After 2014 Finals

Nov 10, 2016 11:34 AM

Ray Allen officially announced his retirement two years after playing in his final game in June of 2014 with the Miami Heat.

Allen had interest in playing in 14-15, 15-16 and even this season if the right opportunity presented itself.

“After the 2014 Finals, I didn’t really think I was done and I thought there would be an opportunity,” Allen said. “Then, I was thinking I didn’t necessarily need or want to go to training camp. So I was going to wait and see if there was a team that made sense for me.

“That first year went by, and it didn’t make sense. There was nowhere I thought I could fit in. Coming into last year, I said, ‘Well, let’s see how it goes again. I started thinking, ‘Do I really want to do it? Do I want to be with my children? Or do I want to be away from my children?’ Then again, there wasn’t a situation that was worth it. Two years went by so quickly.”

Allen said the right situation would have been the opportunity to compete for a title, playing time and playing for a coach who doesn't wear players out with practices.

“If a team made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, then I would’ve looked at it more seriously,” Allen said. “The way that year shaped up, nobody was knocking on my door saying, ‘We would love to have you.’ If I’m going to play, I’m going to have to move. I would have to leave my family or move my family. I didn’t feel I want to do that.

“One of the biggest factors was for me not to go back was the simple fact that I won twice already. I believed going into the 14-15 season, if I hadn’t won a championship, then I would’ve been on somebody’s roster. I would’ve moved. I would’ve tried to make it work anyway possible.”

The Houston Rockets offered the full mid-level exception to Allen in 2014.

Rockets Will Continue Searching For 2nd Star To Pair With James Harden

Nov 9, 2016 11:32 AM

While the Houston Rockets spent their cap space on role players, they will continue to pursue a second star to pair with James Harden.

In 2013, the Rockets signed Dwight Howard but his pairing with Harden never seemed to click.

"Teams that win it all generally have two top-10 players," Daryl Morey said. "We have one. We will always look for more."

Houston has confidence everyone on their roster will thrive in Mike D'Antoni's system, which will bump up their trade value.

"We may have created some downside risk for ourselves," Morey said. "But if we're as good we think we are gonna be -- and that's a team that gets home-court in first round, or just short of that -- I don't see any problems getting it done."

Daryl Morey's Position As Rockets' GM Not As Secure As In Past

Nov 9, 2016 11:26 AM

Leslie Alexander, owner of the Houston Rockets, assumed a larger role in the team-building process this past offseason.

The Rockets signed Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson for a combined $33 million per year.

Alexander was eager for the Rockets to rebound after a disappointing 15-16 season.

The moves signaled Morey's position may not be quite as secure as it once was, league sources say. The Rockets fired Gianluca Pascucci, which was considered a shot across the bow at Morey.

"Last year was disappointing," Morey told ESPN.com. "It's always uncomfortable in Houston. That's how it should be. I don't feel more or less pressure about my job than I ever have."

The Rockets were unable to secure any high level free agent meetings but instead pivoted to Gordon and Anderson.

"We had a choice: keep our powder dry and value play, or go for two blue-chip players past the obvious superstars," Morey said. "It was a tough cap environment. You have to spend the money on someone."
