Rockets Hire Mike D'Antoni As Head Coach

May 26, 2016 5:20 PM

The Houston Rockets have decided to hire Mike D'Antoni as head coach.

D'Antoni was last a head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers and was most recently an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Stephen Silas and James Borrego also received strong consideration from the Rockets.

Houston fired Kevin McHale last November and chose not to retain J.B. Bickerstaff after he served as interim head coach.

James Borrego Gets 2nd Interview With Rockets

May 24, 2016 8:50 PM

James Borrego has moved from Monday's interview with Daryl Morey to a follow-up meeting with owner Leslie Alexander.

Borrego is currently an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs after previously serving as an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans and Orlando Magic. Borrego was briefly interim head coach of the Magic.

The Houston Rockets had seemingly narrowed their search to Mike D'Antoni and Stephen Silas, but they're again widening it.

Kevin McHale was fired in November and J.B. Bickerstaff wasn't retained after serving as interim head coach.

Warriors To Interview Stephen Silas For Top Assistant Job

May 20, 2016 5:31 PM

The Golden State Warriors have interest in pursuing Stephen Silas as their top assistant coach.

Golden State has requested permission from the Charlotte Hornets to interview Silas.

Golden State could no longer wait until the end of the playoffs to secure Luke Walton’s replacement because of Silas’ growing candidacy with the Houston Rockets.

Silas previously worked as an assistant coach with the Warriors from 2006 until 2010 under Don Nelson and Keith Smart. Silas built a strong working relationship with Stephen Curry.

Rockets Interview Rex Kalamian

May 19, 2016 7:59 PM

Rex Kalamian interviewed with the Houston Rockets in Cleveland on Thursday for their head coaching vacancy.

Daryl Morey and Les Alexander conducted the interview of Kalamian, who is an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors.

Kalamian joined the Raptors this season after six with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Kalamian is a candidate to become an assistant coach with the Rockets as well, with the Washington Wizards and Scott Brooks another possibility.

ESPN's Marc Stein and Calvin Watkins reports that the Rockets' interest in Kalamian is sparked in part by his relationship with James Harden and free agent target Kevin Durant.

Dwight Howard Thought He Would Become 'Mini Shaq And Kobe' With James Harden

May 19, 2016 11:17 AM

Dwight Howard and James Harden were supposed to form one of the NBA's next great big man-guard combinations, but they never seemed to gel either on or off the court with the Houston Rockets.

"Before I got to Houston, I didn't know him as a person," said Howard. "What made me really interested in James Harden was the way he attacked the basket when he was at OKC. He was the glue of the team, attacking, making plays, dunking. I was thinking, 'Man, this guy could be special.' When I hit free agency, I watched YouTube tapes of James for hours. I looked at us as a mini Shaq and Kobe. I was thinking, 'Man, this could be a new life for both of us.' And we had some good stretches together. Made it to the Conference finals last season.''

Howard was asked to talk about what happened with their relationship.

"I don't know. ... I want to figure that out, too. I've been trying to wrap my mind around this season, what went wrong, and sometimes you can allow outside things to interrupt the circle. That probably happened with us.''

Dwight Howard Asked Daryl Morey 'Why Am I Here?' When Told Of Reduced Role

May 19, 2016 11:21 AM

Dwight Howard was asked to elaborate on why he felt "disinterested" during parts of his season with the Houston Rockets.

"There were times I was disinterested because of situations that happened behind the scenes that really hurt me," said Howard. "It left me thinking, 'This is not what I signed up for.'''

Howard was asked to specify what he was referring to.

"I felt like my role was being reduced. I went to [Rockets general manager] Daryl [Morey] and said, 'I want to be more involved.' Daryl said, 'No, we don't want you to be.' My response was, 'Why not? Why am I here?' It was shocking to me that it came from him instead of our coach. So I said to him, 'No disrespect to what you do, but you've never played the game. I've been in this game a long time. I know what it takes to be effective.'''
