Chris Paul said that the Houston Rockets' 108-94 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks should have no impact on MVP voting between James Harden and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"James went on a historic run. Know what I mean? Obviously I'm biased about the MVP and whoever or whatnot, but those of you that decide it on head-to-head games with a few games left in the season, good luck with that," said Paul.
Harden finished with 23 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds. Antetokounmpo had 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Eric Bledsoe and George Hill guarded Harden on his left hip throughout the game, forcing him to drive right. But Harden dismissed their defensive impact.
"I still got my shots up. I still was aggressive. I still did what I was supposed to do. Obviously, some shots didn't go in like every other game, but as a team we had our shots that we got. Tonight, they didn't go in. If they go in, it's a different ballgame," said Harden.
Trae Young and James Harden have been named the NBA's Players of the Week.
Young averaged 25.3 points, 11.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds as the Hawks went 2-1.
Harden averaged 44.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists as the Rockets went 3-1.
The Houston Rockets have signed Chris Chiozza for the remainder of the season.
Chiozza was playing for the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League and is the 44th Call-Up of the season.
Chiozza (6-0, 175) signed a 10-day contract with Houston on Feb. 22 and did not appear in a game for the Rockets but saw action in four games for their G League affiliate, Rio Grande Valley. Following the expiration of his 10-day deal, Chiozza rejoined Capital City.
In 47 combined G League games for the Go-Go and Vipers this season, Chiozza has averaged 13.2 points, 7.7 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals while shooting 40.7% from 3-point range. He ranks third in the G League in both assists and steals.
James Harden tied a career-high with 61 points as the Houston Rockets beat the San Antonio Spurs 111-105.
"I don't know how you get any better. Whoever was in the gym tonight probably [saw] something they have never seen before. There's no way. That was one of the best performances -- the magnitude of the game, we needed it -- just everything," said D'Antoni.
Harden, who scored 57 points in his previous game, tied Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant for most points over a two-game stretch.
Gerald Green agreed with D'Antoni's assessment.
"Some of the shots he hit today, it's remarkable. I've seen a lot of basketball in my life, played against a lot of people, and his talent level is just something that I've just never seen before...There's nobody that can stop him. He's just one of those types of players that he's able to get a shot off at any time. He doesn't have any weaknesses."
Chris Paul fell to No. 4 in the 2005 NBA Draft as the Atlanta Hawks picked Marvin Williams Jr. at No. 2. Paul had expected to go to the Hawks.
"I got up at the draft," Paul said of when the second pick was about to be announced. "They pretty much told me they were picking me. I found a house (in Gwinnett County) and everything."
The Utah Jazz then picked Deron Williams at No. 3 and Paul was selected by the then-New Orleans Hornets at No. 4.
The Houston Rockets have agreed to a five-year contract extension with Daryl Morey.
Morey had been in the final season of his contract with the Rockets. Morey became GM of the Rockets in 2007.
"I'm super happy," Morey said. "I'd love to be with the Rockets for life. This obviously solidifies us for a little while. I'm just really thankful to Tilman Fertitta for having the faith in our team. And really, it is about us having a team of people that makes this all work; Coach (Mike) D'Antoni, (vice president) Keith Jones, (vice president) Gersson Rosas, (trainer) Jason Biles, (assistant general manager) Monte McNair, (assistant general manager) Eli Witus, (assistant general manager, Vipers GM) Jimmy Paulis.
"We have too many people to mention, but I'm only as good as the people behind me."
The Rockets haven't won a title since 1995.
"We're trying to give ourselves a chance to win every year," Morey said. "I feel like we've done that most years well while our team of people have been here. I think we've given ourselves a very good chance to win this year. Frankly, I think that's all you can ask for a group working with a team. Obviously, we'd love to deliver a ring this year or very soon."
After a slow start to the season, the Houston Rockets have emerged again as a legitimate challenger to the Golden State Warriors' hegemony.
Eric Gordon was asked if he believes the Warriors see the Rockets as their foremost challenger.
“They have to,” Gordon said. “We’re a lot smaller than last year — we’re a different team — but we match up well with them. I really do believe there’s no other team but us that can really have a chance against them.”
The Rockets took the Warriors to seven games in last season's Western Conference Finals.
"We’re peaking at the right time," Gordon said. “I think we’re right there with them.”
The Houston Rockets have agreed to convert the two-way contract of Danuel House.
The deal will be for the remainder of the current season.
House had turned down the Rockets' offer to convert his two-way contract in January as they had initially offered a non guaranteed three-year minimum deal. The Rockets also offered a guaranteed three-year minimum deal.
House had been in the G League while in limbo as his two-way allotment of NBA days had been used.
Mike D'Antoni compared the late stage of Chris Paul's career with Steve Nash in terms of Paul's ability to think through a game as he gets older.
"I saw Steve Nash do the same thing. Dallas gave [Nash] up for dead, but they didn't know his brains and how much he wanted it and how much he was willing to sacrifice his life to prepare himself to do it. As long as [Paul] has that, there's no way he's going to get dumber or whatever," said D'Antoni.
Though Paul is averaging a career-low in points and field goal percentage, he leads the league by creating 6.8 "wide open" looks per game. The Rockets also have an offensive efficiency of 117.1 with Paul on the court.
"I learned a lot of stuff about my body [during the injury]. And I'm just going to keep trying to implement different things and keep trying to get as strong as possible. I'm still not where I want to be eventually, but I feel like I'm in a great place right now," added Paul.
