Walsh, Knicks Still Talking Extension

May 31, 2011 10:08 AM

As Donnie Walsh continues to work on the future of the Knicks , his own future remains uncertain.

Both Walsh and Garden executive chairman James Dolan have pointed to June 30 -- when Walsh's contract officially expires -- as the important date. The deadline now is a month away.

"We're still talking about it," Walsh told Newsday Monday.

He wouldn't elaborate, nor would he comment on a report that said an extension will be completed this week.

Humbled Selby Eager To Prove He Belongs In NBA

May 28, 2011 2:29 PM

Former Kansas University combo guard Josh Selby, who worked out for the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday and Indiana Pacers on Thursday, has taken a humble, low-key approach into a month’s worth of individual drills with NBA teams.

“The biggest thing I need to show is I deserve to be here like everyone else,” Selby told nba.com after Thursday’s workout with Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson, Villanova’s Corey Fisher, Richmond’s Justin Harper, Michigan’s Darius Morris and Georgetown’s Chris Wright in Indianapolis.

“People were questioning me because of what happened at Kansas. I need to show what happened at Kansas wasn’t the real me. I was going through things, of course the injury (to foot) and suspension (nine games to start season). I’m just trying to showcase my game.”

Selby, who averaged 7.9 points, 2.2 assists and 2.2 rebounds a game during his freshman season, is completely healthy now. He showed that by recording an amazing vertical leap of 42 inches at last week’s NBA combine.

Fredette Intrigued By Knicks' Style Of Play

May 20, 2011 10:23 AM

Jimmer Fredette, the BYU 6-foot-1 sharpshooting point guard, told The Post at yesterday's pre-draft camp here he has agreed to work out for the Knicks in Westchester on June 2.

"It's a team that's definitely intriguing especially with their style of play," Fredette said yesterday. "Being able to get up and down the court, that's what we did at BYU. That's how I feel comfortable playing. Obviously, being from New York and liking the Knicks growing up, we'll see."

Can Fredette fall to 17 or would the Knicks have to trade up a few notches? Because of Fredette's alleged defensive shortcomings and questions on whether he is a floor general, Fredette could slip despite his blistering 28.9 scoring average.

"My expectations are trying to be able to get into the right fit for me," Fredette said. "I don't necessary care how high I get picked. I just want to get picked in the right situation. That's the longevity of your career. If you get picked in the right spot, you have a great system you flourish in, the next contract is what you worry about. You just have to get in the right situation, show you can play well and go from there."

Billups Not Fully Recovered From Knee Injury, Will Have Second MRI

May 19, 2011 10:13 AM

It's been exactly one month and a day since Chauncey Billups strained his left knee in Game 1 of the New York Knicks' first-round series against the Celtics, but he's still not feeling 100 percent.

"I can't get on the court and really like grind, grind," said Billups, whose injury came while driving to the lane with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, and the score tied at 82. "I'm still not ready to do that, but I'm getting better though. At this point, I'm just kind of taking it easy, man."

Billups said he will be flying to New York in the next couple of weeks to have another MRI to make sure everything is healing properly.

Knicks Targeting Hofstra's Jenkins

May 17, 2011 10:25 AM

Several NBA executives view Hoftstra’s Charles Jenkins as a mid-to-late first-round pick.

Jenkins is on the Knicks' radar at No. 17 as team president Donnie Walsh is seeking a point guard of the future for the roster because centers are in short supply.

"It would be great," Jenkins said of being taken by the Knicks. "For me having an opportunity playing in the NBA is great in itself. Whatever team I'll be excited about, but I would love the Knicks, growing up with my dad a big Knicks fan. Any time they played, it was definitely on the TV."

The Knicks will interview Jenkins at the pre-draft camp that takes place Thursday and Friday in Chicago, where he will go through a combine-style host of drills and tests for all teams.

Turiaf To Play For French National Team

May 17, 2011 10:22 AM

Knicks center Ronny Turiaf is expected to pick up the player option on his $4.36 million contract and then spend the summer playing for the French national team, which will attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics at the EuroBasket 2011 tournament in Lithuania.

With Shelden Williams and Jared Jeffries becoming free agents, Turiaf is the only center remaining on the Knicks roster aside from Jerome Jordan, last June's 2nd round draft pick who spent last season in Serbia.

Brown Expects Walsh Will Return

May 12, 2011 10:03 AM

Donnie Walsh expects to return to the Knicks, if only because the team president wants to finish what he started, according to his longtime friend and confidante, Larry Brown.

Walsh isn't nervous and doesn't seem conflicted about his contract expiring on June 30, Brown said. And despite Brown's contentious relationship with the front office when he coached the Knicks - specifically with Isiah Thomas - the Brooklyn product said Walsh should trust owner Jim Dolan, whose alliance with Thomas still casts a pall over the franchise.

"(Walsh) anticipates being back," Brown told the Daily News before taping an episode of "CenterStage" on YES Network, saying he regularly talks with Walsh, his former teammate at the University of North Carolina. "Regardless of what happened with me, Dolan's a good owner who wants to win, who cares about winning.

"I don't think Donnie would want to walk away because I know him well enough that I think he feels like he finally has things going in the right direction, and this city loves basketball. This league needs a great team in New York, and Donnie is remarkable at what he does. So hopefully, it gets settled. When I talk to him, he isn't nervous about it."

Monroe: Paul Would Thrive With Knicks

May 11, 2011 10:45 AM

Earl Monroe, who is friendly with Chris Paul and played at tiny Winston-Salem State, told The Post yesterday he believes Paul has eyes on the Knicks if he becomes a free agent in 2012, and thinks he would love playing for the orange and blue.

"I'm quite sure he would relish being in the Big Apple," said Monroe, who coached the New York City team vs. L.A. in yesterday's inaugural People's Games at Union Square. "He can handle this pressure. Obviously he's one of the premier point guards in the league. To add that with what you already have, you got the real nucleus to having something special happen closer than in four years."

Monroe used Paul's lone showing at the Garden in February as an example of CP3 responding to the scrutiny not found in the Big Easy. Paul played a dog game vs. the Knicks, which continued a mini-slump he was in. Suddenly, reports suggested Paul might have lost his elite status, with rumors about a bad knee circulating.

"Case in point, he had a terrible game here, I was there that night," Monroe said. "People started talking about it. The next few games, he put it up again. He knows what the deal is out here. When people started writing he might have lost it, he was like: Let me try to pick this up and let them know I'm still here."

Knicks Seek Frontcourt Presence

May 8, 2011 12:58 PM

Assistant general manager Allan Houston hopes the Knicks can bolster their frontline.

"I don't think you can look at one team and say that's what the standard model should be because it usually doesn't work that way," Houston said Saturday at the draft combine at the Nets' practice facility. "You have to take what you have and you have a plan, but things change quickly.

"Fortunately, if you put yourself in a good position like Donnie Walsh has in the last few years, you have an opportunity to (get another star). But if it doesn't happen, you have to leave yourself with the best possible scenario left.

"The biggest thing we need is rebounding and a down-low presence," Houston said. "It's unclear if you're going to find that in the draft or not.”

Knicks Scouts Intrigued By Faried

May 6, 2011 10:13 AM

Kenneth Faried, the rugged 6-foot-8 power-forward rebounding machine, has fascinated Knicks scouts, according to people in the know.

The Morehead State bruiser, who ignited the small-school's first-round upset of Louisville, has seen his stock soar since the NCAA Tournament, when the Eagles got to the Round of 32. Likened to Dennis Rodman, Faried set an NCAA modern-day record of 1,673 career rebounds and averaged 13.4 this season.

One scout said he is "probably the best rebounder in the draft."

Some NBA scouts even wonder if he'll be available when the Knicks select at No. 17.
