Thibodeau Sees Similarity In Demeanor Between Lillard, Rose

Mar 22, 2013 9:28 PM

Tom Thibodeau has noticed a similarity in demeanor between Damian Lillard and Derrick Rose.

Thibodeau elaborated on the likeness of the two young point guards.

“Yeah, from the standpoint both guys let their game do the talking,” Thibodeau said. “So that part is very similar.”

Lillard has collected every single Rookie of the Month honor this season.

“He's very impressive for a rookie,” Thibodeau added. “He's come in mature beyond his years. [He] plays the game with a lot of poise. I think the combination of his shooting along with his ability to break you down off the dribble [and] pick-and-roll offense. I've been very, very impressed with him.”

Williams: Lillard Took Pressure Off Davis For Rookie Of Year

Mar 18, 2013 10:43 AM

Damian Lillard has been running away as the best rookie this season and is likely to win the Rookie of the Year award over last June's No. 1 overall pick, Anthony Davis.

In Monty Williams' mind, the way Lillard has risen this season has taken pressure off Davis, allowing him to play in a shadow and develop without shouldering expectations to potentially win the Rookie of the Year.

"With Lillard, he's older, his body is more mature, and that has taken some pressure off A.D," Williams said. "A.D has played well, it's just that Lillard has played like an All-Star. You can't argue with the fact that he has been the best rookie this year, but A.D. has been right behind him. Just not as close as everybody wants him to be."

Williams: Anthony Davis' Rookie Development Similar To Aldridge

Mar 13, 2013 9:30 PM

Monty Williams recently compared Anthony Davis to a Western Conference All-Star when asked about the rookie’s development.

“I liken it to LaMarcus (Aldridge),” said Williams on Tuesday.

Williams was an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers when Aldridge came into the NBA.

After making the comparison to Aldridge, Williams specified the improvements Davis has made under his tutelage and where he must improve.

“His I.Q. for the game is coming along,” said Williams. “At this point we want him to use his speed and quickness against guys who are a ton stronger than he is. He’s had so much put on him. You spend a lot of time trying to protect him from that, but he’s certainly handled the task. As he gets stronger he’s going to have a better jump shot and he’s going to be able to develop a post move. This summer we’re going to work on a go-to move for him that he can use. His weak side defense is going to have to get better with his ability to block shots. I think that’s going to make him a defensive stud some day, especially on the weak side.”

Lastly, Williams was asked if Davis needed to add more weight to help him more of a post presence and avoid injuries.

“To me it’s not about the number of pounds, it’s how much stronger he can get the next three or four years,” said Williams.

Meyers Leonard Feeling Game Slow Down, Beginning To Make Impact

Mar 7, 2013 11:49 PM

Meyers Leonard has bloomed of late, averaging 13.3 points, 6.3 rebounds while shooting 73 percent from the field over a three-game stretch.

Leonard was a lottery pick last June, but has been slow to contribute meaningfully during his rookie season with the Portland Trail Blazers.

“It’s all come out of nowhere, man,” Leonard said. “I’m more relaxed. The game’s not moving so fast. And not only that, my reaction time is better. I’ve been watching a lot of film, I’ve been working hard and just listening."
