Ellison To Meet With Johnson On Potential Counteroffer For Kings

Jan 25, 2013 3:25 PM

Larry Ellison's quest to purchase an NBA team may continue with the Sacramento Kings.

Ellison is expected to meet soon with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, according to minority owner Bob Cook.

Ellison is worth $41 billion and attempted to purchase the Golden State Warriors in 2010.

Ellison apparently would be operating independently of the potential partnership between billionaire Ron Burkle and Bay Area investor Mark Mastrov.

The possible emergence of Ellison could further complicate the Maloofs' efforts to complete their deal with the Seattle group, led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft billionaire Steve Ballmer.

Ellison's presence could present a competitive counteroffer, which would also coincide with a legal challenge.

Loss Of Kings Would Result In Economic Setback For Sacramento

Jan 23, 2013 11:23 AM

The Sacramento Business Review detailed that Sacramento's economy has made positive strides in recent years, but the progress would be set back if the Kings are sold to a Seattle group.

"As a region, we are definitely coming back," said Sanjay Varshney, dean of business administration at Sacramento State.

The Kings are a major part of Sacramento's private sector.

Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA player, is making a strong push to keep the Kings in Sacramento.

Jan 21, 2013 12:35 PM

The Sacramento Kings and the NBA have confirmed the sale of the franchise to a group from Seattle.

The deal has been submitted to the NBA for review and approval in the coming weeks.

"The Maloof family announced today that an executed purchase and sale agreement has been reached to sell the family's interest in the National Basketball Association (NBA) Sacramento Kings to a group led by investor Chris Hansen. The transaction requires approval by the NBA's Board of Governors and therefore no comments or details regarding the agreement will be released.

"We have always appreciated and treasured our ownership of the Kings and have had a great admiration for the fans and our team members. We would also like to thank Chris Hansen for his professionalism during our negotiation. Chris will be a great steward for the franchise."

The league confirmed it has received sale documents.

"The NBA received an executed Purchase and Sale Agreement for the transfer of a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings from the Maloof family to an investor group led by Christopher Hansen. The proposed transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors and has been referred to the Board's committee process for review."

Bird left the Indiana Pacers in the spring to take care of health issues but had planned to return in 2013 or 2014.

Sources: Maloofs Reach Deal To Sell Kings To Seattle Group

Jan 21, 2013 1:18 AM

The Maloof family has agreed on a deal to sell a 65 percent controlling interest of the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle-based group for $525 million, according to league sources.

NBA teams were notified of the deal on Sunday night.

The deal calls for the Maloofs to receive a non-refundable $30 million deposit from the Seattle group by Feb. 1, according to sources.

Yahoo! Sports has reported the plan is for the franchise to retain the SuperSonics team name and play the first two seasons at Key Arena.

The remaining 35 percent of the franchise is owned by minority investors, not the Maloofs.

Stern Asks AEG To Continue Working On Sacramento Arena

Jan 15, 2013 11:03 PM

AEG remains interested in participating in a project to build an NBA arena in downtown Sacramento regardless of whether the team is under current or new ownership.

"We remain committed to the mayor and the city, and we would be more than happy to meet with a potential new owner," an AEG spokesman said.

AEG pledged to contribute $59 million to the arena construction and would be the arena operator.

NBA Commissioner David Stern asked AEC to reengage on a potential Sacramento arena.

"To the commissioner's credit, I don't think he ever forgot about Sacramento," said Tim Leiweke. He said Stern, whom he's known for decades, doesn't like to relocate franchises.

NBA Relocation Committee Call Held Last Week On Possible Sale Of Kings

Jan 14, 2013 1:50 PM

The NBA has conducted a conference call with members of its relocation committee about a proposed sale of majority ownership of the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle-based group.

The call detailed what NBA officials described as "a non-binding set of deal points" on a $525 million sale of majority ownership to the Chris Hansen-Steve Ballmer group, sources said.

Discussions of a sale are ongoing and getting closer to completion.

The call took place last Tuesday, one day before Yahoo! reported that a deal was close to being finalized.

The Hansen-Ballmer Seattle group would purchase 65 percent of the Kings, sources said.

The sale price of $525 million is considered an overall valuation of the franchise.

Throughout the negotiations, the Maloofs had sought a way to keep a small percentage of the team in the transaction, sources said. The Seattle group has wanted the family completely out of the organization.
