Eric Dawson Accepts Training Camp Invite With Hawks

Aug 29, 2013 11:15 AM

Free agent forward Eric Dawson has accepted an invite to the Atlanta Hawks’ training camp, a league source told RealGM.

Dawson played for the Hawks’ summer league team in July, averaging 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds. His camp deal with the Hawks will be non-guaranteed.

Dawson has spent five seasons in the NBA D-League since going undrafted in 2007. In the 2011-12 season, Dawson was called up to the San Antonio Spurs and averaged almost 10 minutes and four points over four games.

Dawson, 29, had a four-year college career at Midwestern State.

Mike Budenholzer Arrested For DUI

Aug 29, 2013 10:55 AM

Mike Budenholzer was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol overnight and charged with driving under the influence.

A trooper stopped Budenholzer about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on 10th Street at Crescent Avenue in Midtown because the Audi A8 he was driving didn’t have the tail lights on, according to the State Patrol incident report.

“As I spoke with him, I noticed that he had bloodshot and watery eyes and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath,” Trooper Johnathon Nelms wrote in his report. "I asked Mr. Budenholzer how much alcohol he had and he advised that he had one glass of wine to drink prior to driving."

After giving Budenholzer a field sobriety test, Nelms placed the coach under arrest.

“I requested a breath test and Mr. Budenholzer refused the breath test by giving a verbal ‘No’,” Nelms said.

Budenholzer was released on bond of $1,524 at 3:24 a.m. Thursday.

Budenholzer became the Atlanta Hawks' head coach this offseason after serving 19 years as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.

“Bud made us aware of the situation last night," Danny Ferry said in a statement. "We are in the process of gathering more information and will have further comment at the appropriate time.”

Ivan Johnson Signs One-Year Contract With China's Golden Bulls

Aug 29, 2013 10:29 AM

With no NBA out clause, Ivan Johnson has signed a one-year contract with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association, a league source told RealGM.

Johnson, the 6-foot-8 free agent forward, received interest throughout NBA free agency, and his four finalists were the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls, a source said. He decided to accept a more lucrative deal in China – where he spent the 2011 season – instead of continuing to wait for an organization to enhance its offer.

Johnson also is hoping to take advantage of China’s shorter season and return to the States late in the NBA season, when teams will deal with possible injuries and look to add pieces.

There remains strong interest in Johnson, and the 29-year-old took a deal for one season in order to return next year. RealGM first reported on Aug. 16 that Johnson had started to seriously consider leaving the NBA for offers in China and Italy.

Johnson averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds over two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, carving a role as an active, tough big man after bouncing around in his basketball career.

James Johnson Will Work Out For Spurs, Hawks, Jazz

Aug 21, 2013 11:48 AM

Free agent forward James Johnson will attend workouts for the San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz and is hoping to leave teams impressed, league sources told RealGM.

Ever since Johnson was drafted 16th in the 2009 NBA draft, teams have envisioned him as an athletic forward at 6-foot-9, but he’s yet to put together a breakout season in four years.

Johnson’s ability to perform in workout settings could have one team intrigued enough to give him an opportunity, though.

Johnson played a complete season with the Chicago Bulls in 2009-10, but he was traded to the Toronto Raptors the next year and averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 2011-12. Johnson, 26, spent last season as mostly a reserve for the Sacramento Kings.

Ivan Johnson Seriously Considering Leaving NBA For Overseas Club

Aug 17, 2013 9:47 PM

Interest in Ivan Johnson hasn’t elevated as he had expected, and now the free agent forward is seriously considering leaving the NBA for lucrative offers from Chinese and Italian teams, his agent Jeremiah Haylett told RealGM.

Four NBA teams have remained in discussions with Johnson, but no organization has stepped up in negotiations the way his representatives have wanted, leaving them believing the 29-year-old could ultimately sign overseas. One of the most productive big men left on the market, Johnson has sought offers higher than the veteran’s minimum – despite a free agency process that has slowed considerably.

“It is very legitimate Ivan could end up overseas this season,” Haylett said Friday. “It’s the best possibility right now. It wouldn’t be a multi-year deal, though, because he would like to get back into the NBA.”

At 6-foot-8, Johnson established himself as a consistent force of activity, rebounding and aggressiveness for the Atlanta Hawks over the past two seasons, averaging 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds in 125 games.

Johnson bounced around collegiately, finishing at Cal State San Bernardino in 2007. Before entering the NBA with the Hawks in 2011, Johnson played in the D-League and abroad in South Korea, Puerto Rico and China.

Lucas Nogueira To Remain In Spain Next Season

Aug 13, 2013 12:34 PM

Lucas Nogueira will remain in Spain next season with Asefa Estudiantes.

Nogueira was a first round pick in June by the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks have a deep frontcourt in Al Horford and Mike Scott, along with the additions of Paul Millsap, Elton Brand, Pero Antic and Gustavo Ayon.

“We are very encouraged by what we’ve seen from Lucas this summer,” general manager Danny Ferry told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday. “Going back to Estudiantes will allow him to continue develop while also playing meaningful minutes against very good competition. We will closely monitor his progress as he works towards his goals as a basketball player.”
