Dumars To Warn Draftees About Playing Time

May 31, 2010 9:03 AM

Pistons president Joe Dumars says it's important that whoever the team drafts next month understands that he may sit on the bench for a few months.

"They would tell you that during the pre-draft meetings we had with them before the draft we talked to them about what's going to happen when you're not playing for two months," Dumars said of Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers and Jonas Jerebko, who Detroit drafted in 2009.

"Guys are like, 'I'll be able to handle it.' And what I say to guys is, 'It's easy to say that today because the draft is in two weeks and you really want your name called out. I'm sure you're willing to say whatever to me right now, but that's going to be real and that's going to be a reality for you. Don't tell me today you're going to be OK with it and think that once it starts you're going to be able to sulk and pout and get sympathy from me. It's not going to happen.' "

Dumars said he issues a warning during his chats with potential picks.

"If you can't handle this you may want to raise your hand and say something to me right now that I may struggle with this, because if you come here and you struggle with this you and I are going to have a problem," he said.

Dumars Remains Confident In Kuester

May 26, 2010 9:13 AM

Pistons president Joe Dumars remains confident in the abilities of coach John Kuester.

Dumars said Tuesday that he believes Kuester will be successful going forward.

"We got decimated, guys," Dumars said. "We got decimated early because of injuries. And I'm not sitting here hiding behind injuries, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend we didn't get decimated by injuries -- early and for a long time, for months."

The Pistons lost 155 games from players because of injuries as they slid to a 27-55 record.

"He had to do makeshift lineups continually for three, four straight months, so any coach put in that situation it's going to be tough. So I thought Q did a very good job under the circumstances of what he had to deal with," Dumars said. "If Q can have a healthy team of 82 games, I think he's going to do a great job for us."

Dumars Wants Pistons To Be Tougher

May 25, 2010 3:30 PM

Pistons president Joe Dumars believes that the team got soft during the 2009-10 season.

Detroit finished 27-55, their worst record since 1994, and they missed the postseason for the first time since 2001.

"Any time you don't have the season you expect, there is going to be disappointment," Dumars said Tuesday. "This is the first time in a decade that we've had a season like this, and we learned a lot from the experience."

"We had some slippage in terms of the toughness and grit that we've had for the last 10 years," Dumars added. "We drifted some from what we were when we were successful."

Dumars said that the Pistons will look to use the seventh overall pick on a young big man.

Ed Davis Compares Big Ben's Retirement Decision To Favre

May 20, 2010 5:12 PM

During Thursday's NBA Draft Combine interview session, Ed Davis was asked about his relationship with Ben Wallace.

Wallace went to Virginia Union, the same school Ed's father Terry Davis attended.

"Ben is like family to me," said Davis. "He's been like an uncle."

Davis was asked if he might be able to share any insight into whether Wallace will retire or continue his NBA career in 10-11.

"I didn't think he'd come back this year, so maybe it's like a Brett Favre thing. You never know."

Pistons Are Definitely For Sale

May 20, 2010 8:02 AM

Pistons owner Karen Davidson said Wednesday that the team is definitely for sale.

"We're looking for a buyer," she told the Detroit Free-Press.

Davidson assumed control of the franchise after the death of her husband, Bill, in March of 2009.

Forbes recently placed the value of the team at $479 million, fourth-highest in the NBA.

The league is adamant about keeping the team in Detroit and its owners must approve any sale.
