Warriors Flush Plans For Arena Resembling Toilet Bowl

Sep 24, 2014 9:59 PM

The Golden State Warriors have abandoned plans for an arena that resembled a giant toilet bowl.

"This was presented at the meeting as very much a work in progress so that we could put the size of the building in context," Warriors spokesman P.J. Johnston told ESPN.com. "In the next few months, we will continue to show much more and the arena design will continue to be refined."

The proposed 18,000-seat arena, which is scheduled to open in 2018, will sit on land eight miles west of the Warriors' current arena in Oakland, in an area of San Francisco known as Mission Bay.

"This was clearly a reminder of the speed and fury of the Internet," Johnston said. "This story spread like wildfire and became part of the news cycle. In the end, we will build a great home for the Warriors in an incredible location and we will meet the expectations of our fans."

Warriors Want To Sign Klay Thompson To Extension

Sep 23, 2014 7:57 PM

The Golden State Warriors are interested in signing Klay Thompson to a contract extension.

Thompson was the subject of trade rumors this offseason with the Warriors ultimately deciding to leave him off the table for Kevin Love.

"We value him in the highest way, and we want to keep him on this team for a long time," Bob Myers said Tuesday.

Myers preferred to keep the backcourt of Thompson and Stephen Curry intact.

"I think most people believe it to be the best, one of the best backcourts in the NBA, and I don't think that that's a minority opinion. I think it's a majority opinion," Myers said. "That's part of the team you don't worry about too much, right? I mean, that part is good, which is hard to find.

"The two guard in the NBA is a depleted position, so we feel like if we can move forward with those two guys, we're in pretty good shape."

Thompson 'Super Excited' Warriors Didn't Trade Him For Love

Sep 15, 2014 10:56 PM

Klay Thompson was involved in trade speculation with the Minnesota Timberwovles and Kevin Love, but preferred to stay with the Golden State Warriors.

"I'm super excited to be back," Thompson said. "I love the Bay Area. I love the Warriors, the fans. I just love our team.

"I wasn't really pissed. I was more just worried about being traded, just because I'm so comfortable in the Bay. I think that's natural for anybody (to not want to) just get up and move. I mean it wouldn't have been the end of the world, but it's a business, and I'm still playing ball for a living.

"I was more happy when they showed faith in me that they didn't want to budge and trade me for a guy (in Love) who's a multiple all-NBA guy and a proven All-Star. I thought that was really cool that the Warriors believed in my potential."

Klay Thompson Prefers To Avoid Becoming Free Agent In 2015, Seeks Max Deal

Sep 15, 2014 11:08 PM

Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors have until Oct. 31 to reach a new contract extension. Faliure to reach a deal would lead to Thompson becoming a restricted free agent in 2015, a scenario he and his agent prefer to avoid.

Bill Duffy is widely known to be demanding a maximum deal for Thompson and sees the shooting guard as the best two-guard in the NBA.

"I don't want (Los Angeles Lakers star) Kobe Bryant to go crazy, but there's some uncertainty as to who he is right now (because of injuries that limited him to six games last season)," Duffy said. "But I think Klay Thompson right now is the top two-way, two-guard in basketball. I think when you look at his body of work, when you look at what he accomplished guarding point guards on a regular basis (last season), I think it's pretty clear."

Thompson last season posted career highs in points (18.4 per game), field-goal percentage (44.4%) and three-point percentage (41.7%), and he typically guarded the opposing team's best perimeter player. Thompson followed the NBA season by averaging 12.7 points per game for Team USA.

Joe Lacob did not discuss a possible extension for Thompson but made it clear that he is seen as a major priority.

"We love Klay," Lacob said in an e-mail. "He is clearly an integral part of our team and our future. I remember sitting courtside at Stanford Pac-12 games watching Klay at (Washington State) for three years. I thought he could be a prototype big shooting guard in the NBA and we targeted him in the draft and were ecstatic to be able to draft him at (No.) 11 in the first round.

"We traded an excellent guard freeing up a starting spot for him and, as is known, despite many requests from other teams over the last few years, we have continued to bet on his continued development. We are very proud that he is a Warrior and also of his major contribution on this year's USA Basketball team. We are looking forward to a great year for Klay, the Splash Brothers and the Warriors."

According to multiple sources, West, along with coach Steve Kerr, was a leading voice in the team's decision this summer not to put Klay Thompson into any trade offer for Kevin Love.
