Durant: Kristaps Porzingis 'Like A Unicorn'

Jan 25, 2016 6:05 PM

Kevin Durant says the combination of size and skill of Kristaps Porzingis makes him a unicorn.

"When they made the pick, I texted [Knicks head coach Derek Fisher] immediately and said 'I like this kid, he can play.' A lot of people were down on him, but he can play. He's a skill guy and I think we've gotten away from enjoying skill players in this league. We get so many players that are athletic and big and strong, but he's a skilled player."

Porzingis was drafted fourth overall in June.

"He can shoot, he can make the right plays, he can defend, he's a 7-footer that can shoot all the way out to the 3-point line," Durant said. "That's rare. And block shots, that's like, a unicorn in this league."

Jan 20, 2016 11:10 AM

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors retained top honors on the NBA’s Most Popular Jersey and Team Merchandise lists.

Results are based on NBAStore.com sales from October 2015 through December 2015 and reflect a record-breaking holiday shopping season. NBAStore.com had its largest Black Friday (Nov. 27) and Cyber Monday (Nov. 30) in history, with combined sales up 20 percent from the previous year.

Rounding out the top five players are the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James (No. 2), the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant (No. 3), the New York Knicks’ Kristaps Porzingis (No. 4), who earned a spot on the list for the first time after a sensational start to his rookie year, and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant (No. 5).

Matt Barnes Pledges To Avoid Derek Fisher During Knicks-Grizzlies' Game

Jan 15, 2016 1:01 PM

Matt Barnes has pledged to avoid Derek Fisher during Saturday's game between the New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies.

Barnes and Fisher had an altercation during the preseason centered on Barnes' estranged wife Gloria Govan.

Barnes didn't want the NBA to discipline Fisher for his role.

“I never wish for another man’s downfall. I always knew the NBA would come down hard on me, so I wasn’t surprised... Cause I’m the bad guy.”

Barnes believes he was suspended for his silence on the issue.

“Probably,” Barnes responded, “because I didn’t snitch.”

Fisher has mostly declined to discuss the situation.

“I know I got to keep my mouth shut because then he’ll run and tell,” Barnes said. “So we’re focused on playing that team (the Knicks). And when I’m retired, him and I will cross paths again.”

Barnes is looking forward to the game against the Knicks.

“I knew when it was coming, obviously,” he said. “We’re former friends and former teammates. I know when we play.”

Courtney Lee doesn't expect there to be an issue between Barnes and Fisher during the game.

“Everybody has a situation where you’re playing against a former teammate or somebody who they don’t like playing against or who they just don’t like,” Lee said. “So I think he’ll handle it as a professional and I’m sure everybody in this locker room is going to help him do that.

“It’s another piece of adversity. It’s always something when we play. It could be the refs calling fouls that you disagree with them. It could be somebody in the stands saying something. Or it could be a coach taking you out or saying something to you or it could be a coach saying something to you or it could be a teammate saying something to you. You just have to block it out.”

Cleanthony Early Could Return In March From Gunshot Wound

Jan 10, 2016 12:11 PM

Cleanthony Early could return from his gunshot wound sometime in March.

Early’s March timetable is why the Knicks are expected to add a depth piece to a 10-day contract soon and are “exploring several options,’’ including monitoring the players waived from teams at the Jan. 10 deadline for guaranteed contracts.

Early suffered a gunshot wound to his right knee Dec. 30 after being robbed near a Queens strip club at 4:15 a.m. after celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday. Early is expected to soon begin rehab.

“He’s feeling better and he’s going to be fine,’’ a friend told The Post. “It was the best possible outcome, and it’s not going to have any effect on his career. There was no structural damage and no infection, so he didn’t need surgery. That was the beautiful thing, not needing surgery. Thank God — his knee could’ve been blown out.’’

Jan 1, 2016 2:36 PM

Cleanthony Early thanked fans for their support and expressed relief for having avoided serious injury after he was shot in the knee during a robbery.

"I got shot but ironically I dodge[d] a bullet," Early wrote on Instagram. "It could have been way worse and I'm thankful and grateful that it wasn't."

Several masked robbers boxed in Early's cab with their vehicles as he left a Queens strip club early Wednesday morning.

The bullet went through Early and was not lodged in his knee, according to sources, and there was no major structural damage to his knee. Surgery will not be necessary at this point.
