Knicks Exercise 22-23 Options On RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin

Oct 20, 2021 9:03 AM

The New York Knicks exercised their 2022-23 rookie scale team options for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin. It's the fourth-year option for Barrett and the third-year options for Quickley and Toppin.

Barrett blossomed in his second season as the Knicks made the playoffs. Barrett played in and started all 72 games. He averaged 17.6 points, 5.8 assists and 3.0 assists per game. Barrett also upped his three-point shooting to 40.1%.

Quickley became a key part of the rotation as a backup guard in his rookie season. He averaged 11.4 points in just 19.4 minutes. Quickley shot 38.9% from behind the arc in his first NBA season.

Toppin was a rotation regular, but played limited minutes as Julius Randle's primary backup. Toppin did play more as the season went along, and was a solid contributor in the postseason.

Five Players Earn Contracts After Camp Invites

Oct 17, 2021 10:23 AM

It's relatively rare for a player on a non-guaranteed training camp deal to earn a regular season roster spot. This is generally limited to one player every few years. This offseason, five players outplayed their camp invite status and seem to have stuck for the regular season.

This group includes: Isaiah Hartenstein (LA Clippers), Wayne Selden (New York Knicks), Dennis Smith Jr. (Portland Trail Blazers), Matt Thomas (Chicago Bulls), Brad Wanamaker (Indiana Pacers). Armoni Brooks could be included in this grouping as well, but his situation was somewhat unique given his re-signed status and conversion process as a former Two-Way player.

When a player makes an opening night roster on a training camp deal, their contract converts to a standard non-guaranteed contract. Prior to that happening, a camp deal doesn't count against the salary cap or tax, and there is no guaranteed salary.

Prior to this season, Dwight Howard was the last player to go from camp invite to roster. Howard made the Los Angles Lakers roster out of camp in 2019.

Knicks Waive Luca Vildoza

Oct 3, 2021 12:43 PM

The New York Knicks have waived guard Luca Vildoza. Vildoza was on a non-guaranteed $3.3 million contract for 2021-22. That was part of a four-year deal the Argentinian product signed with New York. Because the deal was fully non-guaranteed, there will be no cap hit for the Knicks.

Vildoza signed with the Knicks at the end of the 2020-21 season. The hope was New York would have a cost-efficient find for their bench. Vildoza never appeared in a game that season. He's been hampered with an ankle injury this offseason, and it's continued into the start of Knicks camp.

Recently, reports surfaced that Vildoza was competing with Kevin Knox for one of the Knicks final roster spots. New York now has an open standard roster spot and an open Two-Way spot. There are several players on training camp deals competing for those two roster spots.
