Nerlens Noel Files Lawsuit Against Rich Paul, Klutch Sports

Aug 24, 2021 9:49 PM

Nerlens Noel has filed a lawsuit against Rich Paul and his firm, Klutch Sports, claiming he lost $58 million in potential salary while he was represented by them from 2017 to 2020.

Noel took the action after Klutch recently filed a grievance with the National Basketball Players Association, claiming Noel hadn't paid $200,000 in commission on his previous one-year contract with the Knicks.

Noel claims breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract and negligence.

At the start of free agency in 2017, Noel was represented by agent Happy Walters. Noel claims in the lawsuit he was offered a four-year, $70 million deal by the Mavericks, a number that was reported by several news outlets that summer. During the free-agency process, Noel said he fired Walters and hired Paul after they met at Ben Simmons' birthday party in Los Angeles.

Noel said Paul advised him to pass on the $70 million offer to accept the qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent the next summer.

The following season, Noel broke his thumb and missed 42 games as his numbers dropped.

Noel didn't re-sign with Dallas and played the next two seasons for the Oklahoma City Thunder, making the league minimum, $3.7 million combined, as a backup.

Noel played last season for the Knicks, making $5 million. Noel remained with Paul for all four contracts. Noel signed a three-year deal with the Knicks this offseason that guarantees him $27.7 million with another $4.1 million in possible incentives. The deal was negotiated by agent George Langberg.

Knicks Signed Dwayne Bacon To Exhibit 10 Contract

Aug 24, 2021 11:50 AM

When the New York Knicks signed Dwayne Bacon after he was waived by the Orlando Magic, he appeared to be a good bet to make their 15-man roster for the start of the regular season.

But Bacon actually signed a one-year, non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 deal despite being a starter for the Magic last season.

Bacon's contract is similar to what an undrafted or second round player signs. While Bacon is a CAA client, sources say the Knicks are taking a flier on Bacon because of Tom Thibodeau's close friend Steve Clifford who coached him with the Charlotte Hornets and Magic.

The Knicks could have their final roster spot come down to Bacon and Luca Vildoza.

“Bacon is a 2-3, can score some but is undisciplined and lacks basketball IQ,’’ one longtime NBA scout told The Post. “Clifford liked him better than I would have expected. That likely has a lot to do with why the Knicks signed him. I’m certain Clifford recommended him to Thibs, but he’s more scorer than shooter and needs the ball in his hands to score."

Celtics Send Evan Fournier, Two 2nd Rounders To Knicks In Sign-And-Trade For TPE

Aug 18, 2021 8:08 AM

The New York Knicks have acquired Evan Fournier from the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade that nets them two second round picks.

Boston will create a traded player exception as part of the deal worth approximately $17.1 million.

The Celtics similarly created a trade exception when they sent Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets.

According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, the picks will be the top-55 protected second rounder in 2023 from the Hornets and the worst of a 2023 second round pick from either the Oklahoma City Thunder or Washington Wizards, or the better pick between the Dallas Mavericks or Miami Heat.

Damian Lillard Not Currently Available, Hasn't Requested Trade

Aug 11, 2021 12:51 PM

Damian Lillard is not currently available for a trade and he has also not requested one from the Portland Trail Blazers, sources tell Zach Lowe of ESPN.

A trade of Lillard, if it does happen during the 21-22 season, is widely expected to come down to the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks.

The Knicks are almost entirely out of a two-team trade scenario for Lillard until Dec. 15 when players signed during the offseason can be traded. The 76ers, meanwhile, can match salary and have a proven All-Star available in Ben Simmons. But the 76ers are on the clock for trading Simmons, who they have signaled they intend to trade.
