New York Officials Estimate Moving Madison Square Garden Would Cost Taxpayers $8.6 Billion

Nov 20, 2021 8:14 AM

During a confidential meeting of Empire State Development Corporation, officials said it would cost taxpayers $8.6 billion to relocate Madison Square Garden in order to expand Penn Station. The estimate includes $5 billion to purchase new land and construct a replacement arena.

Officials said the public would have to eat the cost “to avoid lingering MSG complications that would arise with no buyout,” according to minutes from the meeting.

MSG was granted a 50-year operating permit in 1963 and the Dolans asked for a permit in perpetuity in 2013. Instead, they were given 10 years to move.

MSG also does not pay property taxes on the building.

Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Otto Porter Out Versus Pistons

Nov 19, 2021 2:57 PM

The Golden State Warriors are sitting Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala and Otto Porter Jr. for Friday's game against the Detroit Pistons. The game is the second night of a back-to-back.

Curry's hip has bothered him since a collision with James Harden on Tuesday.

"I'll get an assessment," Curry said. "That charge really messed with me a little bit, so I'm just trying to deal with that a little bit. So we'll see how it feels when I wake up."

Green is dealing with a right thigh contusion while Iguodala has right knee soreness.

Tom Thibodeau On Benching Starters: We've Gotta Figure It Out

Nov 11, 2021 1:34 PM

Tom Thibodeau benched his starters for the entire fourth quarter of the New York Knicks' 112-100 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

Thibodeau didn't play any of Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier from the 2:01 mark of the third quarter, when he took out Randle in favor of Obi Toppin, until the end of the game, instead opting to ride the all-bench grouping of Derrick Rose, Alec Burks, Immanuel Quickley, Toppin and Taj Gibson.

"Yeah, just they didn't play well," Thibodeau said of his decision to sit the starters, none of whom spoke to the media after the game. "That's it. We've gotta figure it out. And right now we're playing well on the road and we're not playing well at home, which is unusual. So we've gotta get that straightened out."

The all-bench unit went on a 29-7 run to erase what had been a 22-point Milwaukee lead.

"You know what they say: When it's 10 games, they say you need 20," Thibodeau said. "When you say 20, they say you need 30; at 30, you say 40.

"And before you know it, the season is over. So that's a bunch of bulls---."

Kemba Walker Expects More Rest Days Moving Forward

Nov 9, 2021 8:58 AM

Kemba Walker sat out his first game of the season on Sunday for a rest day on the first half of a back-to-back set. Walker returned on Monday and played his regular minutes, as the New York Knicks took down the Philadelphia 76ers.

During the 2020-21 season with the Boston Celtics, Walker did not play in both ends of back-to-back contests. He was regularly rested in the second game. Boston took this strategy to keep Walker healthy after knee issues impacted the guard's 2019-20 season.

Following the win over the Sixers, Walker said that more rest days will happen throughout the season. Walker stopped short of saying it would be the same as last season.

“It’s a long year,” Walker said. “I’m not gonna play every game. I feel great. It worked out. I want to try to stay as healthy as I can. The healthiest guys win games. It was definitely my call.”
