Boozer's Calf Improving, But Status Uncertain

Jan 30, 2010 4:44 PM

Jazz forward Carlos Boozer missed the team's game against the Kings on Friday night with a strained right calf.

Utah general manager Kevin O'Connor described the injury as "moderate," noting that "mild is when guys play ... and severe is when you're talking about weeks."

Boozer felt a "pop" in his calf and is walking with a "slight limp."

"I'm getting better. Better today than I was yesterday," added Boozer. "So, I'm taking it one day at a time. ... My swag ain't right back yet, but it's getting there."

The soon-to-be-free-agent suffered the injury in Wednesday's win over Portland.

Utah Excelling With Kirilenko In Starting Lineup

Jan 25, 2010 7:56 AM

Since an injury forced Andrei Kirilenko into the starting lineup on Jan. 11, the Jazz are 5-1.

Utah coach Jerry Sloan had been playing Kirilenko with the second unit in hopes of providing a punch off the bench.

"I don't think it's a mental thing or other things. I think it's more the defense of the team. Team-wise, we're playing better," Kirilenko said.

"We struggled a little bit before the new year. But after we concentrate on our defensive stuff a little bit more, we started playing better. That's been one of the keys for success. Not me personally, but the team."

In Utah's five most recent wins, opponents average only 92.2 points.

"A.K.'s length bothers people defensively," said Deron Williams. "He gives us an added shot-blocker out there to start the game, which helps."

"No question [his size] makes a big difference. He's able to block shots and play defense. I probably should have had him [starting] all along, if I'd been smart enough," Sloan said.

Brewer Shrugs Off Trade Rumors

Jan 23, 2010 9:36 AM

Jazz guard Ronnie Brewer isn't letting trade rumors effect his play on the court.

Brewer has been linked in rumors involving the Grizzlies, who may be looking to acquire him as insurance should Rudy Gay skip town in the coming year.

The Arkansas product said he had about 50 messages from friends and family when he woke up on Thursday.

"We don't have a professional team, so they took that pretty seriously," said Brewer. "My mom called me, my dad called me and they were pretty worried, but as far as I know, I'm still on this team playing."

Utah isn't believed to have initiated the talks and they were disappointed that Memphis made their interest in Brewer public.

"I'm still here with the team," the guard said. "You can hear those type of rumors as closer you get to the [trade] deadline. I'm just going to continue to play hard and try to help this team try to win games. As long as I'm here, I'm still going to try to do my best."

Going Back To Europe Will Be Last Resort For Kirilenko

Jan 23, 2010 9:32 AM

Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko would like to re-sign with the club when he hits the free agent market in 2011.

In addition, he's now saying that a return to Europe will only be a last resort. Not all that long ago, Kirilenko hinted that he was looking for a way out of his lucrative contract in Utah to return home.

"Getting back to Europe is definitely my last choice," he said Friday. "Because the level of the basketball is really different than here, and you want to play at the best level as possible as long as you can."

Kirilenko wants to remain loyal to the Jazz, but hinted that he expects to receive interest from the Nets, who will soon be owned by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov.

"It's tough to say," Kirilenko said of potential pursuit. "I'm pretty sure if I was a Russian owner I would be interested to get a Russian player."

The Grizzlies reportedly have interest in acquiring guard Ronnie Brewer from the Jazz.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports wrote on his Twitter page that Memphis would like to use Brewer as insurance in the event Rudy Gay leaves.

"Grizzlies interest in Utah's Ronnie Brewer is future insurance for losing Rudy Gay thru deadline trade or free agency, league sources say," Wojnarowski wrote.

Jazz Noncommittal On Sundiata Gaines

Jan 22, 2010 8:06 AM

The second 10-day contract of Jazz rookie point guard Sundiata Gaines will expire on Sunday.

Utah will have to decide whether or not they want to give Gaines a guaranteed contract for the remainder of the season or send him back to the NBDL.

"I think we'll use the time we've got allotted (to decide), and sit down with Coach (Jerry Sloan) and talk with him about it," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said.

Sloan was even more noncommittal.

"We'll just see what happens," he said. "I don't make a decision on anything right now. He's here, and we'll go as if he's gonna be here.

"But he has to work," Sloan added. "He has to work like all the other players, and try to improve himself so he can get the opportunity if it's presented to him."

Gaines hit a game-winner for Utah last week, but is averaging just three points and one assist in 7.1 minutes per game.
