Heat Will Try To Persuade Hassan Whiteside To Take Less Than Max

May 30, 2016 2:02 PM

Hassan Whiteside would prefer to re-sign with the Miami Heat.

Whiteside has grown comfortable with the Heat and they also offer him living in place without state income tax and greater annual raises.

The Heat will try to sell Whiteside on taking less than the max to create space to do other business in free agency.

Pat Riley has called Whiteside the top priority of the Heat in the offseason.

Miami will have to use cap space to sign Whiteside.

Miami's Top Priority Is To Get Meeting With Kevin Durant

May 20, 2016 1:05 PM

The Miami Heat continue to plan on pursuing Kevin Durant in free agency.

The Heat are limited in how they can pursue Durant while re-signing Hassan Whiteside and Dwyane Wade where it would be virtually impossible.

"The plan is and always has been: Go after Durant and free everything up – so much so that you insulted your superstar this offseason by telling Dwyane Wade no on multiple years, even though that’s what he wanted," said Dan Le Batard. "Dwyane, who deserves more of your allegiances as business and a company and management than Chris Bosh does. Because the whole thing is get in a room with Durant after this season.

"What I’m telling you, no matter how much you laugh at it, is that the Heat is getting in the room with Durant. Now, what happens from there, who knows? But you can sit here and laugh at it all you want, but the plan, the construct is – the priority, the No. 1 thing this offseason – is get in the room with Durant.

"You do what you want with the information. All I’m telling you is priority No. 1 is not get Dwyane locked up, Whiteside locked up. No. 1 on the list is can you get the superstar that is the big get in free agency while also taking care of your people around that?"

Miami could have more cap space in 2017 should Durant re-sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder on a one-plus-one deal.

Miami's Top Offseason Priority Is Re-Signing Hassan Whiteside

May 19, 2016 3:37 PM

The top goal of the Miami Heat this offseason is to re-sign Hassan Whiteside.

Whiteside earned just $990,000 in his season season with the Heat and will likely receive a max contract.

"He's our No. 1 priority, period," Pat Riley said. "He's 26 years old, he's a game changer, and I don't even think he's reached his real ceiling in a couple of areas in his game. He's shown all of us he can be a 15 [points], 15 [rebounds] and four blocked shots a game. He'll be right there in front of the line for us."

The Heat need to use their cap space to re-sign Whiteside.

Heat Fear Chris Bosh May Be Forced Into Medical Retirement

May 16, 2016 12:40 PM

The Miami Heat fear Chris Bosh's condition may prevent him from ever being cleared to play again by team doctors.

Bosh has had a series of consultations with specialists and a medically forced retirement is possible.

"I feel very badly for CB because I know how much this game means to him," Erik Spoelstra said Sunday after his team's Game 7 loss to the Toronto Raptors. "I think everybody knows how much CB means to me."

Neither the Heat nor Bosh have announced the nature of his medical condition.

Two weeks ago, after months of silence, they released a joint statement that read: "The Heat, Chris, the doctors and medical team have been working together throughout this process and will continue to do so to return Chris to playing basketball as soon as possible."

Bosh wants to play and the Heat would love to have him return

According to league rules, if he does not play again by Feb. 9, 2017, an independent doctor approved by the Heat and the player's union can review Bosh's case and give a recommendation to the league.

Bosh is owed $75 million over the next three seasons and would receive the entire amount.

Bosh's salary would come off the salary cap in the summer of 2017 if he doesn't return.

"I don't really have a time period for you," Whiteside said after Game 6. "I'm just getting better."

Carroll crashed to the court after colliding with Goran Dragic on a drive to the basket. X-rays were negative but he didn't return due to the left wrist contusion.

Deng's x-rays were "inconclusive" and he'll be reevaluated on Thursday.

The Toronto Raptors won the game to take a 3-2 series lead.

Hassan Whiteside In Walking Boot, Knee Brace

May 9, 2016 11:25 AM

Hassan Whiteside was wearing a walking boot and a knee brace on Sunday. Whiteside has been ruled out for Game 4 on Monday.

Whiteside is listed as day-to-day with a sprained MCL.

Erik Spoelstra said “it’s way too early to tell” how long Whiteside will be out.

“Where my mind was, where Hassan’s mind was, that’s about the best news we could have,” Spoelstra said of the MRI showing a sprain and not a tear. “He’s going to be doing treatment, a lot of rest.”

Whiteside will be a free agent this offseason and has been poised to sign his first significant NBA contract.

Dwyane Wade Didn't Intend Disrespect Shooting During 'O Canada'

May 8, 2016 9:16 PM

Dwyane Wade blamed a time-clock management issue for his shooting at the basket during the singing of the Canadian national anthem on Saturday. Wade insisted he meant no disrespect toward Canada.

Wade received criticism on social media from Raptors fans and some media members who questioned his decision to take shots while the anthem was played. Wade then stood in line with teammates when "The Star-Spangled Banner" was played.

"It's something that I do before every game that I prepare for, and I've been doing it my whole career," Wade said after the Heat's practice session Sunday at AmericanAirlines Arena. "So I understand whatever is said from that standpoint, but I'm not a disrespectful person. So if anybody thinks I'm being disrespectful towards a country, then they have no idea of who Dwyane Wade is."

NBA spokesman Tim Frank, responding to a question from ESPN of whether Wade would face ramifications for his activity during the singing of "O Canada," said the league talked to the Heat about the situation.

"We spoke to the team, and the Heat will work with its players to make sure no pregame routines interfere with either anthem going forward," he said.
