Sonics Still Shopping Payton?

Aug 27, 2001 1:49 PM

The Pioneer Press reports that there is some talk around the league of a Minnesota movement to acquire Gary Payton. Emphasis on "talk" at the moment.

Reportedly, The Wolves, Chicago, Seattle and New York have tossed around some possible scenarios, but they are extremely complicated and therefore unlikely to be completed.

A myriad of names have been thrown around. Supposedly Minnesota would deal Terrell Brandon to the Knicks and Wally Szczerbiak to Chicago. The Bulls would likely send some package of Ron Mercer, Marcus Fizer and Ron Artest to Seattle. The Knicks would send one of their point guards somewhere, unless they feel they really need to carry 4 quarterbacks.

Money Talks in Rice Trade

Aug 18, 2001 10:35 AM

When money talks, players walk. That was the case in the revival of the Glen Rice trade.

The New York Post reports that the Knicks and Mavericks each agreed to pay the Rockets about $1 million yesterday morning as "future considerations" to keep the three-team trade from collapsing, according to sources.

The New York Daily News reports that the Rockets never came close to killing the deal because of Rice's foot. Although the Rockets did want a draft pick and were holding out for a conditional selection as late as Thursday, they never had any intentions of scuttling the trade because they feel they got the best player.

Houston Doesn't Have a Problem

Aug 17, 2001 8:15 AM

The Associated Press is reporting that the Rockets, Knicks and Mavericks have agreed to their week-old trade. Reportedly, both the Knicks and Mavericks have agreed to give the Rockets "future considerations" to compelte the deal, though no word on what those considerations are.

Earlier today, The New York Post reported that the 3-way trade was almost dead. The Knicks rejected Houston's request for a lottery-protected first round pick to compensate for Rice's injury.

On the other hand, Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News reported that all signs pointed to Houston accepting the deal.

Rockets Want Pick to Make Rice More Palatable

Aug 16, 2001 8:10 AM

According to the New York Post, the Houston Rockets want a bit more in order to sign off on last Friday's 3-way trade that brought Glen Rice to Houston. Specifically, the Rockets want a conditional draft pick, according to sources, if Rice is not able to play a certain number of games because of his ongoing foot problems.

Trade Delayed

Aug 15, 2001 8:16 AM

The New York Times reports that the Glen Rice deal has hit a snag. Whether it is a minor setback or the first sign of a trade about to be rescinded will be decided over the next 48 hours.

What is clear is that the Houston Rockets postponed a news conference yesterday in which they were to introduce Rice, the three-time All- Star shooting guard/forward, as their newest franchise player. Rockets team physicians wanted more time to review Rice's medical records before making official the three-team deal with the Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks.

The Rockets have until 12 p.m. Friday to approve the deal. If the Rockets do not approve the trade, all the players will return to their current teams. Anderson's six- year, $40 million deal ? the amount the Rockets signed him for in order for him to become a Knick ? would be voided.
