Drummond Paying His Own Connecticut Tuition Via Loan

Dec 22, 2011 2:20 PM

Andre Drummond took out a loan to pay for his Connecticut tuition this season.

Michael Bradley initially gave up his scholarship for Drummond, but that was ultimately deemed not possible.

"It took the better part of a couple of months to get it a conclusion, which was reached at the end of October," spokesman Kyle Muncy said. "It only came to light now because Andre said he was a walk-on."

UConn has only 10 scholarships this season after losing one because of NCAA violations and two more because of a poor academic performance rating.

Noel Could Reclassify For Class Of 2012

Dec 22, 2011 9:58 AM

Nerlens Noel could reclassify and become a member of the incoming college class of 2012. Noel is currently a high school junior.

“Yeah I’ve heard that one,” Noel said of the rumor. “I’m not gonna do that though. I’m 90 percent sure that I won’t reclassify. But the fact that those coaches think I can play now, definitely gives me even more confidence on the court.”

Syracuse, Providence, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgetown and Connecticut are considered the leaders for Noel.

Krzyzewski: Scholarship Athletes Deserve More Than $2,000 Stipend

Dec 15, 2011 2:43 PM

The NCAA recently approved a package that will allow conferences the ability to give full-scholarship athletes $2,000 in spending money.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said it’s a good first step, but $2,000 is “cutting it short.”

"I think that kids should get more," he said. "They shouldn’t get paid. But a lot of kids that go here get some aid (and) a small number of kids have a better scholarship than athletes."

UNC-UK Annual Meeting Could Be Discontinued Due To Conference Expansion

Dec 1, 2011 11:37 PM

The annual series between Kentucky and North Carolina may not continue due to the expansion of the SEC and ACC.

The nonconference schedule will be squeezed as teams can only play 27 games plus a multi-team tournament during the regular season.

“You’ve got to say to yourself now, you’ve got Syracuse and Pitt, those are pretty big heavyweights,’’ said UNC senior associate athletic director Larry Gallo, who works with UNC coach Roy Williams on scheduling. “Are we going to play them twice, are we going to play them once, who are you going to play away? That still all has to be worked out.

“Then you’ve got to add in two games against Duke, [NC] State, the rest of the ACC. The [holiday] tournaments usually have some pretty good competition … and we’re in the first year of a four-year contract with Texas. You want to keep playing games like Kentucky … but do you want to schedule anything any heavier?”

Colangelo: Boeheim Welcome To Return As Team USA Assistant

Dec 1, 2011 6:10 PM

Jerry Colangelo, who is the chair of USA basketball’s board of directors and the essential general manager of the USA national team, said the current crisis at Syracuse will have no bearing on Jim Boeheim being the top USA Olympic assistant to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski for the 2012 Olympics in London.

“I am following the story just as everyone else is,’’ Colangelo said. “He’s a personal friend and a terrific individual. He’s part of USA basketball and from what I know at this point, I think he’ll be fine. The university is standing behind him. It has no impact on USA basketball. We’ll continue to monitor everything coming down the pike here.’’
