Ranadive Compares Owning NBA Team To Buying 'Piece Of Art'

Jun 30, 2015 5:02 PM

Vivek Ranadive testified in court on Tuesday during the sixth day of a trial challenging the half-billion arena deal Ranadive and his co-investors struck with the city of Sacramento in 2014 to build a downtown arena.

"It was really an emotional decision," he said. "If I had actually done it based on the numbers, I would not have done it. I knew I would have to write large checks for a long period of time."

Ranadive was approached by David Stern about buying the Sacramento Kings to keep them from being sold to a group from Seattle.

"To this day, I couldn't tell you want that value is," he said. "It is just dirt right now; it is air. There is nothing there. I simply don't know."

Under questioning from the plaintiffs’ attorneys Tuesday morning, Ranadive likened the purchase of the team to buying a "piece of art," saying that there are only 30 teams in existence.

Jun 30, 2015 11:29 AM

The Sacramento Kings are studying whether they can fire George Karl for "cause" after he attempted to trade DeMarcus Cousins.

The Kings have been dismayed by how quickly Karl's relationship with DeMarcus Cousins became toxic and irreparable.

Kings Interested In Hiring John Calipari

Jun 30, 2015 12:24 PM

The Sacramento Kings are gauging the potential interest of John Calipari in taking over their head coach and front office jobs.

Calipari has been communicating with owner Vivek Ranadive and other members of the Kings' ownership group in recent weeks.

Kings' ownership understands that it will take a multiyear financial package of $10 million-plus annually to get Calipari to seriously consider leaving Kentucky, sources said.

The Kings' ownership has increased their interest in Calipari as the relationship between DeMarcus Cousins and George Karl has deteriorated.

Calipari coached Cousins at Kentucky for a season in 2009-10.

Calipari has also been linked in the past year to the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Pelicans.

Officials around the NBA have pleaded with Ranadive to stop these sharp changes in direction.

As one league official familiar with Ranadive's mindset told Yahoo Sports, "He's trying to find a magic button to push that'll fix everything."

Vlade Divac was hired just a few months ago in what was initially believed to be a ceremonial position.

"For the 100th time, I have the best basketball coaching position in the world," said Calipari on Twitter. "I am not looking for any other coaching position."

Calipari also explained that he's been in touch with the Ranadive in general about Cousins over the years and about the team's interest in Willie Cauley-Stein.

Rodney Stuckey Eyes Deal With Contender

Jun 26, 2015 3:52 PM

After a productive season on the competing Indiana Pacers, Rodney Stuckey has plans to sign with a contender in free agency, with the Houston Rockets expected to be among interested teams, league sources told RealGM.

Stuckey has a desire to be in a competing situation again next season, but will still prioritize a possible return to Indiana where there is strong mutual interest. Stuckey scored 12.6 points in 26.4 minutes per game last season, flourishing in Frank Vogel’s offensive system and providing stability as a starter or reserve.

Stuckey also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in his return to a ball-handling role on a playoff threat in the Eastern Conference. The Sacramento Kings are also expected to express a level of interest in Stuckey, scouring for an available combo guard, a source said. Several contending teams could emerge for Stuckey during the free agency process.

Spending seven of his first eight seasons with the Pistons, Stuckey rose into a cornerstone player early in his Detroit career. He averaged 16.6 points, 4.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 2009-10, but the franchise fell in the East and left scattered roles within the team.

Stuckey has averages of 13.3 points and 3.8 assists over his NBA career. The 6-foot-5 guard was the Pistons’ 15th overall selection in the 2007 NBA draft out of Eastern Washington.

Jun 25, 2015 10:59 PM

A stream of Ty Lawson smoking a hookah and watching the NBA Draft surfaced.

In the clip, Lawson tells a friend before the Denver Nuggets’ first-round selection of Emmanuel Mudiay: “They’re probably gonna get Mudiay, then I’m gonna get a bunch of tweets about, ‘Yo, Ty, you’re getting traded.'”

Once the Nuggets’ took Mudiay, at No. 7, Lawson said: “Told you. I’m going to Sacramento, bro.”

Lawson also commented on other picks.

“Cauley-Stein getting drafted might mean Cousins is gone,” Lawson said of Kings big man DeMarcus Cousins. Lawson then sat back a inhaled the hookah as he awaited the Nuggets’ selection. He turned to the camera and said, “Tim Connelly, it was good.”

Lawson has been connected to joining George Karl with the Kings.

Kings Considering Firing George Karl

Jun 25, 2015 6:49 PM

Vivek Ranadive has considered firing George Karl just four months after hiring him. Karl has attempted to get DeMarcus Cousins traded this offseason.

No potential replacement for Karl has been mentioned or considered.

"If you fire Karl, now you can't control Cousins because he'll know he's running the place," the source said. "Now he'll feel like he's telling you what to do."

Ranadive has been a huge supporter of Cousins since he purchased the Sacramento Kings.

There was pushback from Cousins' camp when the Kings hired Karl, and the Sacramento Bee reported that Cousins and Karl haven't spoken for months.

No firing is imminent even though Ranadive has broached the subject.

"He's brought up the possibility of getting rid of George over the last few days," the source said.
