Andrew Wiggins On Minnesota: I Hope I'm Here Forever

Apr 30, 2015 7:09 PM

Andrew Wiggins was named NBA Rookie of the Year on Thursday and he hopes to remain with the Minnesota Timberwolves for many years to come.

The Wolves have had difficulty building a consistent winner around past superstars such as Kevin Garnett and Kevin Love.

"I hope I'm here forever," said Wiggins.

"I don’t believe there’s any curse or nothing like that. We just needed the right pieces. I feel like now we’ve got them."

Apr 30, 2015 5:50 PM

Damian Lillard is optimistic about signing a rookie contract extension this offseason with the Portland Trail Blazers.

"For me, this is where I want to be," said Lillard.

"Whatever we need to do to make that happen, we’ll make happen."

Lillard was an injury replacement on the All-Star team this season.

Kevin Love Would Get $2.283M Raise By Opting Out, Re-Signing

Apr 30, 2015 1:12 PM

Kevin Love may delay his ultimate free agency decision until 2016, but opting out of his contract this offseason would still make sense.

Love is scheduled to earn $16,744,218 next season, but his max salary projects to be $19,027,800. Even if Love re-signs on a one-year deal or two-year deal with a player option in the second year to become a 2016 free agent, Love could give himself a $2,283,582 raise by opting out.

Love could sign a five-year deal with the Cavaliers in 2015 worth approximately $109.4 million, or wait for 2016 and sign a five-year deal worth $145.1 million. If Love were to sign elsewhere, he could get four years and $81.2 million in 2015 or four years and $107.8 million in 2016.

LaMarcus Aldridge: I'll Cross That Free Agency Bridge Later On

Apr 30, 2015 12:45 PM

The Portland Trail Blazers were eliminated from the playoffs in Game 5 and they face an uncertain offseason where LaMarcus Aldridge will decide his future.

“I’ll cross that bridge later on,” Aldridge said when asked about his impending free agency.

The Blazers' playoff chances were severely compromised when Wesley Matthews ruptured his Achilles.

“Things were looking like we were going to take over the West,” he said.

“We were one of the top offensive teams in the league,” Aldridge said. “We never found that rhythm. That’s disappointing for us because we know this team is a lot better than what we played.”

Aldridge is expected to draw interest in free agency from the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks.

Al-Farouq Aminu To Become Free Agent

Apr 30, 2015 12:22 PM

Al-Farouq Aminu will test free agency rather than take his $1.1 million player option for the 15-16 season with the Dallas Mavericks.

Aminu outperformed expectations with the Mavericks.

“I think it makes the most sense to me,” he said. “You just look for a great fit. This year, I think I found one. Hopefully, I can do the same.”

“We were lucky Al chose us,” Donnie Nelson said. “With an eye on the history that we’ve had here with Rick and our development program, he certainly should opt out, and he will, as noted. We hope to be in a position to reacquire his services.”

Report: Mavericks, Rajon Rondo Mutually Decided To Part Ways

Apr 29, 2015 1:31 PM

The Dallas Mavericks and Rajon Rondo made a mutual decision to part ways the day after Game 2.

Sources say the two sides framed the reasoning as a back injury as a favor to try to help Rondo save face.

Rondo was going to be replaced in the starting lineup for Game 3 regardless of the decision.

The Mavericks felt Rondo's behavior was impacting other players, particularly Monta Ellis.

Dirk Nowitzki said he didn't regret the Rondo deal after the Mavericks were eliminated in Game 5.

“If you can get a player like Rondo, I think you go for it any time,” Nowitzki said as he walked to the team bus for the final time of his 17th season. “I don’t think anybody is looking back at that now. It was a deal that was there. It was a deal we went for it, and it just didn’t pan out for both sides, and both sides moved on.

“But Mark (Cuban) and Donnie (Nelson) always pull the trigger to make this team better. Sometimes it works, sometimes it’s a gamble and sometimes it doesn’t. So you just move on afterwards.”

Celtics Anticpate Kevin Love Remaining With Cavs

Apr 28, 2015 7:24 PM

The Boston Celtics will pursue Kevin Love this offseason but sources expect him to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Love can opt-in and delay free agency for 2016 when the cap increases.

The Cavaliers can offer Love one additional season than rival teams.

“Cleveland can pay him $30 million more than anyone else,” said the source.

Execs Expect Brook Lopez To Re-Sign With Nets On Max Contract

Apr 28, 2015 2:09 PM

The thinking around the NBA is that Brook Lopez will opt out of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets and re-sign on a max contract.

Lopez has $16.7 million remaining on his contract for the 15-16 season.

“If he walks, where are they going? They don’t have draft picks. They’re flip-flopping their pick [with Atlanta]. They’re getting the 29th instead of the 15th. For their future, I don’t see how they can lose him,” the GM said. “If Brook wants to stay there, he should be able to get whatever he wants.”

Lopez was nearly traded multiple times at the deadline, but the Nets kept him and he played some of the best basketball of his career.

The Nets can offer Lopez an extra season on his next contract.

“Why would they let him go?” an exec from the Central Division said. “Everything I see, he’s a good kid. And he can [bleeping] play.”

“If he leaves, then they are starting all over again,” yet another rival executive said. “He has proven he is healthy. There’s no question he’s always been a good basketball player. The question was ‘Can he come back from the injury?’ He’s shown he can, especially the last two months.”

Lakers Remain Interested In Rajon Rondo Despite New Skepticism

Apr 28, 2015 1:34 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers remain interested in signing Rajon Rondo this offseason, but sources say Jim Buss is not the believer in his game he was earlier in the season.

Mitch Kupchak also believes Rondo is only a value at a certain price.

The Lakers hope to sign a foundational piece in free agency and they're not convinced Rondo is that type of player.

The Lakers are expected to have approximately $22 million in cap space.

Anthony Davis To Receive $140M+ Max Offer From Pelicans

Apr 26, 2015 3:36 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans will offer Anthony Davis a max contract this offseason that could exceed $140 million.

The exact figure of the contract will depend on how the cap increases in 2016, but the Pelicans will offer Davis the maximum allowed.

The Pelicans will have until Oct. 31 to convince Davis to commit to the franchise long-term.

Because Davis was elected by the fans to start in February's All-Star Game, and since he is expected to earn All-NBA first-team honors when voting results are announced soon, New Orleans will have the ability to include a provision in the deal that entitles Davis to start his max deal at 30 percent of the league's salary cap as opposed to a mere 25 percent provided he is an All-Star starter or makes All-NBA next season as well.

Davis has the option of signing a shorter extension to preserve some flexibility for his options in free agency.
