Blake Griffin, Celtics Agree To Fully Guaranteed One-Year Deal

Sep 30, 2022 12:12 PM

Blake Griffin has agreed a one-year, fully guaranteed deal with the Boston Celtics.

Griffin spent the past season and a half with the Brooklyn Nets.

Griffin will give Boston depth in the frontcourt following the injuries to Robert Williams III and Danilo Gallinari.

The Celtics now have 11 fully guaranteed contracts on their roster, though that number does not include Al Horford's mostly guaranteed deal.

Griffin averaged 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds across 56 games (24 starts) this past season for the Nets.

'Some Wonder' In 2021 Whether Stephen Curry Would Extend With Warriors

Sep 29, 2022 4:07 PM

A few years ago, the relationship of LeBron James and Stephen Curry appeared to improve from the peak of their rivalry when they met in The Finals in four straight seasons.

James may have had an ulterior motive thinking he could recruit Curry to the Los Angeles Lakers when it looked like the Golden State Warriors might be unable to reload into a title contender. Curry's contract status was also in doubt amongst some within the league before he signed a four-year, $215 million extension in 2021.

"There was some wonder about whether Curry would take that last contract with Golden State," said Brian Windhorst on The Bill Simmons Podcast. "Now, look, there ended up being zero point zero drama. The Warriors offered the full boat, but he had some injury issues. The Warriors were looking at a $400 million payroll. Nobody was sure they were going to do it, but I thought he was, you know, giving him the wink, wink and was like 'Hey, you know, if you don't take that last contract you can come down to the Lakers.'

"That's what happened with Kyrie [Irving]. When Kyrie was heading toward free agency and it was clear he wasn't going to stay in Boston, LeBron all of a sudden, the two of them kind of mended that fence. And I think it was based on that, the concept of playing together again in L.A. It didn't work out. It didn't happen."

LeBron James Was 'Never Comfortable' In Miami Like He Is In Los Angeles

Sep 29, 2022 3:27 PM

LeBron James signed an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers this past offseason, which represents at least a six-year commitment to the franchise. James spent only four seasons with the Miami Heat before returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers for another four-year stint.

James has clearly built a life for himself in Los Angeles beyond basketball.

"I think he's making a decision, which by the way, he has every right to, he's making a decision like this is where I want to be at the end of my career," said Brian Windhorst on The Bill Simmons Podcast. "He was never totally comfortable in Miami. As soon as the season ended, he was out of there back to Akron.

"Maybe even if he played in L.A. at that time of his life, that would have been the way he was. He was never comfortable there. He's comfortable in L.A. His roots are in."

Deandre Ayton Blames Robert Sarver For Contract Standoff With Suns

Sep 29, 2022 10:33 AM

The Phoenix Suns refused to offer Deandre Ayton a five-year max contract, which forced him to sign a four-year, $133 million offer sheet with the Indiana Pacers.

The belief around Ayton is that the decision came from Robert Sarver, who has begun the process of selling the Suns.

"That is certainly something that caused the ire of him," said Marc J. Spears. "I was told that it was Robert Sarver who didn't want to give him that fifth year, who wanted to save the money."

Ramona Shelburne added to the reporting of Spears.

"You know, Marc, you said something really important there, which is who Deandre Ayton in his mind attributes the idea that he didn't get that max contract," said Shelburne. "Does he blame Robert Sarver? Does he blame that front office? Does he blame Monty Williams.

"My understanding from talking to people close to Deandre is that he thinks this was Robert Sarver's decision as well. And Robert Sarver's not going to be the owner anymore. So there is some healing that can happen there. But I know there were some hurt feelings over that contract and how that played out.

"If they were going to instantly match an offer sheet that he signed, why not just give him the max contract? Yes, it saved them a year and $40 million but as somebody close to Deandre told me 'There's a karma to this. Why do that to your No. 1 overall pick?'"

Kyrie Irving: Vaccine Decision Cost Me Four-Year, $187M Extension With Nets

Sep 27, 2022 10:40 AM

Kyrie Irving believes his decision not to get vaccinated cost him a four-year, $187 million contract extension offer by the Brooklyn Nets prior to the 21-22 season.

Irving and the Nets were unable to agree to terms on a new contract this offseason, leading him to exercise his $36.5 million player option for 22-23.

"I gave up four years, 100-and-something million deciding to be unvaccinated and that was the decision," Irving said during Nets media day on Monday. "[Get this] contract, get vaccinated or be unvaccinated and there's a level of uncertainty of your future, whether you're going to be in this league, whether you're going to be on this team, so I had to deal with that real-life circumstance of losing my job for this decision."

Irving said he felt the decision whether to get vaccinated was like "an ultimatum" from the organization, in regard to his contract.

Marks acknowledged that it was ultimately New York City's vaccination mandate, coupled with Irving's anti-vaccination decision, that stalled conversations about the future.

"So two summers ago, that was pre-citywide, statewide mandates that went in," Marks said. "So once the vaccine mandates came in, and we knew how that would affect [Irving] playing home games and so forth, that's when contract talks stalled. So it didn't get to [a point], 'Here's the deal, now take it back.' That never happened."

Marks talked optimistically about Irving's future with the Nets.

"At the end of the day, we're happy that Kyrie is back here," Marks said. "I'm listening to the press conference he had this morning and my takeaway from that is that he's committed. He understands that in order for him to be a free agent and get what he rightfully wants, he's going to have to show commitment out there. We're happy to support him in any possible way throughout the season to make sure that he's healthy and ready to go."
