Bargnani Goes First In 2006 NBA Draft

Jun 29, 2006 1:41 AM

Coming into draft night most experts labelled the draft as unpredictable, and in the end even this was an understatement.

As expected, Andrea Bargnani went first overall to the Toronto Raptors, and then the chaos started.  The Bulls took LaMarcus Aldridge with the second overall pick, but not for themselves, but rather for the Portland Trail Blazers - one of the six deals Portland made for the night - who then took fly flying forward Tyrus Thomas for the Bulls two picks later.

Michael Jordan got his guy in sharp shooter Adam Morrison with the third overall pick, while Rudy Gay fell to 8th to the Houston Rockets, who then traded the rights to Gay along with forward Stromile Swift back to Memphis for forward Shane Battier.  The trade will not become official until mid-July.

The night contained 11 deals, with Pacer second round selection (#45) Alexander Johnson having the honor of being dealt twice; from Indiana to Portland and then from Portland onto Memphis.  Portland were big winners, turning Sebastian Telfair and pick number four into Aldridge and Brandon Roy, who was one of the most coveted players heading into the draft.  Minnesota originally selected Roy but then later dealt his rights to the Blazers for guard Randy Foye.

Isiah Thomas once again drew the anger of Knicks fans on hand at Madison Square Garden when New York became the 20th team to pass on Connecticut guard Marcus Williams, who eventually was selected with the 22nd pick by New Jersey.  While Williams free fell after most expected him to be selected between picks 6 and 10, Thomas selected forward Reneldo Balkman.  Balkman, most believe, was a second rounder at best and could definitely have been selected later in the draft.

A full recap of picks, trades and rumors can be read on RealGM's Draft Night 2006 page.

Colangelo Willing To Listen

Jun 28, 2006 10:12 AM

Raptors president/general manager Bryan Colangelo will accept calls today, but according to a report by the Toronto Sun he won't be listening to offers for the first pick in the NBA draft tonight unless they contain specific elements.

A trade appears unlikely considering the Raptors want an All-Star in return for the pick should no pick be included in the deal, and if a pick comes back to Toronto Colangelo also wants a very good player.  So far no one is biting.

The candidates continue to point to either LaMarcus Aldridge or Andrea Bargnani.  Colangelo never mentioned Aldridge's name in a 20-minute news conference yesterday, but continued to mention Bargnani's frequently.

Shelden Hasn't Worked Out For Hawks?

Jun 28, 2006 10:06 AM

Teams choosing below Atlanta can thank the Hawks should players suprisingly drop below the fifth pick thanks to the rumored promise the team has made to Duke bruiser Shelden Williams, but there is a bizarre twist.

According to the Boston Globe, Williams said he has never worked out for the Hawks.

Signs Point To Bulls Taking LSU's Thomas

Jun 28, 2006 6:28 AM

Is Tyrus Thomas a lock to go second overall to the Bulls?

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a Bulls source is all but assured that general manager John Paxson will select the 6-8, 217-pound forward from LSU at No. 2. Paxson agreed last week that Thomas, 19, is the most athletic player available.

But another organization insider insists that, as of Monday, Paxson still was undecided on which prospect best fills the bill for the Bulls, who need more size in the post and at guard.

'I'm just [hoping] to go to the team where I'm best going to fit in,'' Thomas said. ''I don't want to be No. 1 and then not have a great career. I'd rather go down to 2, 3 or 4 and go somewhere where I can shine and play well.''

Redick Has Herniated Disc; Dismisses Surgery Rumors

Jun 27, 2006 6:30 PM

Former Duke guard J.J. Redick told ESPN.com on Tuesday that he has a herniated disc which is pressing on a nerve, but dismissed rumors that he needs surgery.

Redick said he received a cortisone shot and has been pain free for a week. He said he expects to play in the NBA summer league, the USA Basketball national team trials in July and during training camp with whichever team selects him in Wednesday night's NBA draft.

Redick said he suffered the injury while working out at Duke earlier this month before going to the pre-draft camp.

"It really flared up during the combine during the vertical tests and the sprinting," said Redick. "I've been pain free. It was asymptomatic. I've been doing exercises to strengthen my back. I'll be back on the court in a week."

Magic Don't Feel Redick's Back Problems Are Serious

Jun 27, 2006 2:52 AM

J.J. Redick met with the Magic late last week, but did not work out because of a back injury. He recently had a pain-killing injection in his back and was checked out by Magic doctors last week in Orlando. The injury was not deemed to be serious, Dave Twardzik said.

The DUI arrest that occurred in early June is not expected to affect his stock.

"It has to raise some red flags, and you just do more background checks to see if this is something that's a problem or was it just a foolish mistake the kid made," Twardzik said. "You go beyond just talking to the people at Duke because you don't want a one-sided story. We think we've done our homework."
