Kevin Love Will Attend UCLA

Jul 25, 2006 5:55 PM

Kevin Love, arguably one of the top two players in the class of 2007 with guard O.J. Mayo of North College Hill (Ohio) High, could go against his summer-league rival at least twice in 2007-08 if Mayo follows through with his private proclamation to the USC staff that he would sign with the Trojans.

The big Oregonian center decided that he would attend UCLA today.

"It would be crazy if we were both there [in L.A.]," Love said. "We have a good friendship and it would be a lot of fun. It'd be huge for the USC-UCLA rivalry."

Apparently, UCLA coach Ben Howland was so ecstatic that, according to Love, the UCLA coach was near tears.

Howland was recently met with a long-term contract extension from the legendary college program.

Kevin Love Leaning Towards UCLA?

Jul 25, 2006 10:35 AM

Kevin Love, rated number two in the high school class of 2007 behind O.J. Mayo, appears to be heading to the Los Angeles area.  The consensus is that Love will announce on Tuesday that he will attend UCLA instead of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mayo has yet to make a formal annoucement of where he will play, but has reportedly told the staff at USC that he will be attending school there.

Stan Love, Kevin's father, a former Oregon and NBA player, said only Monday night that "he's 17, so how do you know what they're going to do.''

Love could be one of many players from the 2007 class that spends just one year in college, along with Mayo, Bill Walker, Derrick Rose, Eric Gordon and Michael Beasley.

Loophole May Enable High Schooler Bill Walker To Enter Draft

Jul 11, 2006 3:07 PM

After being declared ineligible to play his senior year of high school basketball, Bill Walker, best known as O.J. Mayo's teammate at North College Hill (Ohio) High may be able to enter this coming year's NBA Draft.

Walker met the first half of the NBA's draft-eligibility requirements for high school seniors -- which says that a high school senior can enter the draft if it has been a year since his original high school class graduated.

The Ohio governing body is essentially stating that Walker's original high school class is the one that graduated in June 2006.

Despite often being overshadowed by teammate Mayo, Walker is a 6'6" small forward with athleticism that parallels Vince Carter.

If Walker decides to enter the 2007 draft, he would become the first high school senior to be picked since the NBA changed its draft rules during the last collective bargaining session.

Sneaker Guru Looks For Loopholes In NBA Age Limit Policy

Jul 11, 2006 12:46 AM

Sonny Vaccaro, who runs the Reebok camp, believes that the NBA's age limit is un-American.

"I don't think it's fair to the American kids," Vaccaro said. "At least keep them equal. Don't come and tell me that the Europeans are ahead of us (in basketball). Don't come and tell me that they're catching up and that they're more well-schooled and that (stuff) and let them enter and our kids not."

Vaccaro believes there are loopholes in the NBA rules.

Establishing dual citizenship might be a way for Americans to circumvent the system. An American with dual citizenship could theoretically become eligible before the end of the year.

"If in fact they're letting the Europeans play earlier than our kids, then I said, 'OK, we'll apply for dual citizenship,'" Vaccaro said. "I know it's far-fetched, but on a legal matter with a few kids it could've been done."

Mayo And Walker Narrow Choices To USC, Florida And Kansas State

Jul 7, 2006 3:18 AM

A report earlier this week indicated that O.J. Mayo told the staff at USC that he would be joining them for the 2007-2008 academic year, but on Thursday the phenom clarified the situation.

Bill Walker is Mayo's teammate at North College Hill and is ranked second behind him.

"Me and Bill are still looking at Florida and K-State," Mayo told the Herald News of West Paterson, N.J. "But USC is first on my list, and then K-State and Florida."

"I'd like to try to get it over with by this week," Mayo told the Herald News. "I'm still talking it over with my mother and my grandfather. I'm going to take a visit (to Florida) and K-State and make a final decision. A verbal is just a verbal. (USC) is what I like right now, but that could change."

Another O.J. To USC?

Jul 5, 2006 8:04 PM

Multiple sources have informmed ESPN.com that O.J. Mayo has told the players and coaching staff of the University of Southern California that he will commit to them.

NCAA rules forbid college coaches from commenting publicly on commitments until they receive a signed national letter of intent.

It has long been believed that the 6-4 high school standout would play for Bob Huggins, but the lure of Tim Floyd and the major media market of Los Angeles are very attractive to Mayo.

"[Mayo] could change a program and give it instant credibility," said one source. "He sees the big market and knows that he's not too far away from being marketed. [Going to USC] would only help him and he's confident enough to win a national championship."
