Jonathan Kuminga Considering G League, Is 50/50 On Reclassifying Into Class Of 2020

May 23, 2020 10:36 PM

Jonathan Kuminga whittled down his college list to Auburn, Duke, Kentucky and Texas Tech, and also included the NBA G League as a possible destination for the 2020-21 season.

Kuminga is currently rated the #1 prospect of the 2021 class.

Kuminga added that he is still considering whether to reclassify into the class of 2020.

“For me, right now, I would say 50/50. With everything is going on right now, I don’t want to put myself in the type of situation where I don’t know what I’m doing. So I’ve just got to be patient with it, sit down with my family and plan on everything," Kuminga told Paul Biancardi on the "High School Basketball Happenings" podcast.

Penny Hardaway: It's A Recruiting War When It Comes To G League Pathway Program

May 21, 2020 9:04 PM

Penny Hardaway has spoken candidly about how the NBA's program allowing elite high school players to sign with a G League pathway program will impact college basketball recruiting.

"It's going to have a huge impact, because it's just a recruiting war right now when it comes to that," Hardaway said. "But I think it's going to affect us because we're recruiting a bunch of five-stars."

The NBA's initial designs last year called for players to receive offers of $125,000. But contracts for players in the G League's yearlong developmental program will now reportedly reach as much as $500,000.

"When they took the money from a smaller level to a larger level, then that's fair," Hardaway said. "That's definitely more appealing to a certain group of guys as we saw this year."

Penny Hardaway Compares G League Recruitment Of Prospects To 'Tampering'

May 1, 2020 3:01 PM

Penny Hardaway believes the NBA's new use of the G League is detrimental to college basketball as they are actively recruiting prospects who have already committed to schools.

“For me, I didn’t think the G League was built – and I could be wrong – to go and recruit kids that want to go to college out of going to college,” Hardaway said. “I thought they were going to be the organization that was going to be, if you want to go overseas or you absolutely did not want to play college 100 percent, that this would be the best situation for you before you go into the NBA.

“But taking guys out of their commitments (or) they’ve already signed and continuing to talk to their parents, it’s almost like tampering. I really don’t agree with that.”

Jalen Green had committed to Memphis, while Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix backed out of their commitments to Michigan and UCLA respectively.
