Heat Likely To Pursue Trade For Damian Lillard If Blazers Make Him Available

Apr 26, 2023 11:41 AM

The future of Damian Lillard with the Portland Trail Blazers is uncertain this offseason as they come off another season in which they were out of the playoff picture well before the end of the season.

Portland has attempted to rebuild around Lillard with win-now veterans such as Jerami Grant, but they have also wanted to keep young players with value such as Shaedon Sharpe.

If Lillard and the Blazers decide to explore trade options, the Miami Heat are a team expected to have interest.

"I think the Heat are on the cusp of looking for another star maneuver," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "I would put them on the list for Dame Lillard if Dame ends up getting traded. If he goes to market, I think the Heat are on that list. I don't know if they have enough. A lot of their offer would be built around Tyler Herro, who was just injured. I suspect, I don't know for sure, just to be clear, I don't know for sure if they're going to offer him, but I suspect that would be the type of thing. That and draft picks."

Grizzlies Expected To Try Again To Upgrade From Dillon Brooks In Offseason

Apr 24, 2023 11:19 AM

Dillon Brooks will be a free agent this offseason and his future with the Memphis Grizzlies is uncertain considering his liabilities on offense and the fact they sought out upgrades at small forward at the deadline. Brooks is a very effective defensive player, but he doesn't space the floor at the wing in a way to maximize the Memphis offense and has questionable shot selection.

The Grizzlies pursued trades at the deadline for Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.

"They tried to upgrade at the trade deadline," said Tim MacMahon on the Brian Windhorst Podcast. "They threw four picks at the Nets trying to get Mikal Bridges. They really weren't able to get the Raptors in serious conversations, but they would have given up a few picks to get OG Anuoby. They've tried to move on from Dillon Brooks already.

"I don't know if Dillon Brooks is on this team after this series. We'll see if the Grizzlies can comeback and win it. I certainly don't know if he's on this team after free agency this summer, but the problem is if he's not, who's guarding all the best players? All the stars on the other teams?"

MacMahon suggests the Grizzlies could reengage the Nets on a trade for Dorian Finney-Smith, who could be a more feasible trade target.

"If they're letting Dillon Brooks, they absolutely have to get a really, really, really good defensive wing player. They can let him go in free agency, they just have to figure out how to replace me. Trust me, they've put a lot of thought into that."

Raptors Only Consider Scottie Barnes Untouchable On Trade Market

Apr 22, 2023 11:52 AM

The Toronto Raptors are willing to make anyone on their roster available via trade this offseason outside of Scottie Barnes.

"Outside of Scottie Barnes, who is coming off a disappointing follow up to his Rookie of the Year campaign, everybody and everything is on the table as the off-season kicks into high gear ahead of the draft in late June and free agency at the beginning of July," writes Josh Lewenberg.

This leaves Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby as high impact, possibly available players on the trade market. Fred VanVleet, Jakob Poeltl and Gary Trent Jr. will be free agents.

“I think changes are going to be made on all fronts,” Masai Ujiri said. “We’re going to address that with the team. We saw how different players on our team would rise, would do well, but we never did it collectively. Maybe that could be fit. Maybe that could be system, sometimes role orientation, sometimes accountability – all the things we are going to really look at it how our roster is built. We believe in the players we have. Whether it’s tweaks or major changes, we’re definitely going to look at everything.”

Hawks Have 'Continued Question Marks' On Trae Young, Could Discuss Future With Rich Paul In Offseason

Apr 11, 2023 3:05 PM

The future of Trae Young with the Atlanta Hawks has become a topic of intrigue around the league following a report from The Ringer that there is a belief their front office has the "green light" to trade him should that be their preferred course of action.

Young responded to the report on Tuesday and there was additional reporting from Shams Charania.

While Young and Quin Snyder "both have genuine respect for each other," the team appears to be in wait and see mode.

"I'm told the Hawks are continuing to closely monitor Trae Young's day-to-day commitments and his habits on a day-to-day basis on the floor and off the floor," said Charania. "What Trae Young is willing to do to be a leader, what it takes to be a leader. Clearly, there's been continued question marks, I think, around that organization as far as Trae Young. An unbelievable player on the floor...

"The one thing that is of note, his agent is Rich Paul, and that's someone that we know the expectation is going to be there will be conversations, I think, between Trae Young's camp and the Hawks and their ownership as far as what direction the Hawks are going to in the future as far as with Trae Young."

Trae Young On Trade Rumors: It Could Be False, Could Be True, You Never Know

Apr 11, 2023 1:27 PM

Trae Young responded to a report from The Ringer that indicated the front office of the Atlanta Hawks have the authority to trade anyone on their roster this offseason, even Trae Young.

Young said nobody within the Hawks has told him he could be traded, but “stuff like that comes out all the time.”

“It could be false, could be true, you never know,” Young said.

Young was also asked if the Hawks' Play-In games felt bigger as they can determine his fate with the franchise.

“It’s hard – you can’t look at it.

“Especially as the player in the moment, you can’t look at what’s gonna come on next year,” Young said. “After the game, if the game doesn’t go your way tonight, what’s gonna happen? Like, you can’t focus on things like that. That messes up your head and then you’re not ready to play so, me, I’m not worried about that. I’m gonna let my game play. After the season, whatever happens, happens. I mean, I’m focused on the next task at hand. I can’t worry about the outside noise or whatever fake stories come out, or what’s true, whatever.”

Mavs Concerned This Season Could Impact Luka Doncic's 'Willingness To Be Patient'

Apr 11, 2023 10:56 AM

Tim Cato of The Athletic confirmed a report from ESPN's Tim MacMahon that there are fears within the Dallas Mavericks that Luka Doncic could request a trade as early as 2024.

"Team sources, in recent weeks, have expressed similar concerns to The Athletic about the impact this season’s collapse could have on Doncic’s future in Dallas and willingness to be patient," wrote Cato. "They have reiterated those same fears of complacency all season, and especially now."

Doncic attempted to deflect MacMahon's report during his media availability on Sunday by indicating it didn't come from him.

“It was funny, you know, because I didn’t know that was true. I didn’t say it,” said Doncic.

MacMahon clarified his reporting by saying that it was fears from within the Mavericks and not Doncic's camp.

Sources told Cato in 2021 that they were motivated to speak openly about the frustrations of Doncic because of the "urgency" around the coming seasons. The Mavericks went on to reach the Western Conference Finals that season, but didn't even qualify for the Play-In in 2023.

Damian Lillard: I Want A Chance To Go For It

Apr 10, 2023 4:13 PM

Damian Lillard, Joe Cronin and Chauncey Billups all talked about the need for the Portland Trail Blazers to make big moves this offseason after they finished the season 2-15 over their final 17 games with a 33-49 record overall.

Lillard said there are talented players who want to come to Portland. When asked if he sees a plan to make it all happen, Lillard said he sees “a road to what we could do.”

“But,” Lillard said, “there is a difference in ‘We can do this … and we can do that’ and actually doing it.”

The Blazers are likely to trade their lottery pick unless they land the No. 1 overall selection and can select Victor Wembanyama.

“I’m just not interested in that. That’s not a secret," Lillard said of adding another young player. “I want a chance to go for it. And if the route is to (draft youth), then that’s not my route.”

Cronin says the Blazers have a “target group” of players they think would be good fits in Portland, the same players he said he failed to land in February at the trade deadline.

Hawks Have 'Green Light' From Ownership To Trade Anyone, Even Trae Young

Apr 10, 2023 11:42 AM

The front office of the Atlanta Hawks has "the green light from ownership to do whatever it wants to with the roster, which includes considering trade opportunities involving All-Star point guard Trae Young," sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer.

Travis Schlenk exited the front office in December and the decision-makers are now Landry Fields, Kyle Korver and Quin Snyder. While negotiating his contract to become head coach of the Hawks, Snyder demanded and now wields substantial influence over personnel decisions.

Young is on Year 1 of a five-year, $215 million contract extension he signed during the 2021 offseason.

While Young is a talented on-ball player and would raise the floor on offense of any team in the league, he drifts off-ball and is also one of the NBA's biggest liabilities on defense.

The more likely scenario than a Young trade this offseason is that the Hawks retool around him and Dejounte Murray.

Mavericks Will Explore Trading 2023 First Rounder If Retained At Lottery

Apr 10, 2023 11:14 AM

If the Dallas Mavericks retain their draft pick on lottery night, sources tell Marc Stein of Substack they will explore trading it.

The Mavericks will only keep their pick if it is in the top-10, otherwise it will be conveyed to the New York Knicks as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade. If the Mavericks keep the pick, they can also trade the 2027 selection.

After missing the play-in altogether one season after reaching the Western Conference Finals, the Mavericks are firmly in win-now mode ahead of their own fears of a Luka Doncic trade request as early as 2024.

The Mavericks will also navigate the free agency of Kyrie Irving this offseason, who they hope to keep.

Mavericks Fear Potential Luka Doncic Trade Request As Early As 2024 Offseason

Apr 8, 2023 11:19 AM

The Dallas Mavericks have some degree of fear that Luka Doncic could request a trade as soon as the summer of 2024 if they don't make significant progress by then, team sources tell Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

Doncic just finished Year 1 of a five-year, $215 million supermax extension. Doncic has a player option for the 2026 offseason.

The Mavericks missed the play-in entirely after reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2022.

Doncic participated in personnel discussions with the front office for the first time this season and pushed for a major upgrade, which led to their trade for Kyrie Irving.

MacMahon wrote that Doncic "appeared relieved" after their loss to the Chicago Bulls, which officially eliminated them from play-in contention. When MacMahon shared the observation with a member of the Mavs' staff who knows Doncic well said, "Good eyes."
