NBA Issues Memo On Standing For Anthem

Sep 30, 2017 11:45 AM

The NBA issued a memo to their 30 teams reinforcing its rule that players and coaches must stand for national anthem.

The memo was distributed by deputy commissioner Mark Tatum. It instructs teams that "the league office will determine how to deal with any possible instance in which a player, coach, or trainer does not stand for the anthem."

The memo states that individual teams "do not have the discretion to waive" the rule that players, coaches and staff stand for the anthem.

The league has the discretion to discipline players who violate the rule. It is not clear if the league would exercise it in the event of any protest.

The league also does not want teams independently disciplining players, sources say, and has encouraged open dialogue within teams.

The memo also suggests teams might prepare a video tribute or public service announcement featuring "team leadership speaking about the issues they care about."

Board Of Governors Approve Legislation On Resting Players

Sep 28, 2017 4:54 PM

The NBA's Board of Governors have approved legislation on resting players.

Adam Silver will have the discretionary ability to fine teams for resting players in several instances, including sitting multiple players outside of unusual circumstances in a single game, and healthy players in nationally televised ESPN, ABC and TNT games.

Teams will be discouraged from sitting players for away games.

The NBA has attempted to reduce the instances where teams rest players by reducing the number of back-to-back games.

Union Reviewing Corruption Case For Any Ties To NBA Players

Sep 27, 2017 7:59 PM

The National Basketball Players Association is reviewing whether the federal filing of corruption charges of several college basketball coaches contains any ties to NBA players.

“We are going to be rigorous in making sure that anybody who is engaged in this misconduct is out, at least in terms of being certified by this [players association] to continue to work with our players,” Michele Roberts told The Vertical.

As part of the investigation, the FBI raided the office of Andy Miller, according to multiple reports. Miller, one of the NBA’s most prominent agents, is the founder of ASM Sports. Christian Dawkins, one of 10 people arrested Tuesday, is a former agent at ASM.

While the NBPA does not certify financial advisers, Roberts made it clear that any agent involved in misconduct would be held accountable.

“Agents we scrutinize much more thoroughly because we do have the power to allow or disallow them to represent our players,” Roberts said. “Agents understand that if there is an issue, we will hold them directly responsible for the referral.”

Roberts is anticipating the fallout of the probe to impact NBA players.

“This is the sort of thing that keeps me up at night. Our players are literally stalked because of their income by people, most with good intentions, but far too many without. It’s disturbing. I feel badly at the college level because to [an] extent it works. Frankly because these kids are not compensated in ways that would make them able to say no to overtures of that kind of cash. It needs to be addressed in the first instance at the college level, but to the extent it impacts our players, we will figure it out and take care of it.”

Ten Teams Transferred $201M In Revenue Sharing To 15 Other Teams

Sep 19, 2017 10:59 AM

After the 16-17 season, 10 teams transferred a combined $201 million in revenue sharing to 15 other teams.

The Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers neither contributed or received in revenue sharing.

The Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls contributed $144 million (71.5 percent) of revenue sharing transfers.

"The need for revenue sharing was supposed to be for special circumstances," one large-market owner told ESPN.com, "not permanent subsidies."

Expansion, Relocation Discussed As Teams Take Financial Losses

Sep 19, 2017 10:58 AM

The topic of expansion was raised by at least one owner during a recent Board of Governors session.

The NBA owners could split an expansion fee of potentially more than $1 billion, which is not split evenly with the players.

The NBA has one major market city attempting to bring a team back in Seattle.

Some profitable teams have suggested the NBA consider relocating some of the teams losing the most money to stronger markets.

14 NBA Teams Lost Money During 16-17 Season

Sep 19, 2017 10:48 AM

Fourteen of the NBA's 30 teams lost money during the 16-17 season before collecting revenue sharing payments. Nine of those teams lost money even after receiving those payments despite the NBA's new television deal.

The Board of Governors will address the gap between the NBA's most profitable teams and the rest of the league on Sept. 27-28. Owners have planned a half-day review of the league's revenue-sharing system.

The nine teams that lost money even with revenue sharing were the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards.

"Teams in small markets are told we need to run our businesses better so we can make money," one ownership source told ESPN.com. "But teams in the largest markets can run their businesses poorly and still make money."

In all, 10 teams transferred $201 million combined in revenue-sharing to 15 other teams in 2016-17, according to the documents.

Mark Cuban: Streaming Will Make Live Content Even More Valuable

Sep 11, 2017 9:10 PM

The Houston Rockets were sold to Tilman Feritta for $2.2 billion and Mark Cuban believes it is a good indication of the continuing rise in NBA franchise valuations.

Cuban has had a longtime rivalry with the Rockets since he purchased the Dallas Mavericks but he believes Ferrita bought the franchise at a good price.

"[Fertitta] got a bargain," said Cuban. "The streaming world is going to make destination live content even more valuable. It's much harder to draw an audience over the top with unlimited choices verus TV where we are one of 200 channels."

Cuban was influential in changing the culture of the NBA.

"When I got here, everyone tried to make me go old school and be like everyone else. Owners were supposed to write checks, and that was it."

Cuban purchased the Mavericks in 2000 for $285 million.

Chris Hansen Offers To Convert KeyArena Into Two Concert Venues

Sep 7, 2017 5:13 PM

Chris Hansen's group attempting to bring the NBA back to Seattle has made a proposal to renovate KeyArena into a mid-sized concert venue.

The plan would split KeyArena in half by creating a 6,200-seat indoor concert venue on one side and a 3,000-seat outdoor covered amphitheater.

Hansen is attempting to build an arena in the SoDo area of Seattle.

Hansen’s group said the KeyArena re-development would occur after a SoDo arena is built. Hansen’s group estimates the cost to be between $90 million and $100 million.

“We believe these new venues would be a perfect complement to the larger SoDo Arena’s 16,000-21,000-seat flexible capacity,’’ Hansen’s group said on the website. “It would also address the City’s need for a mid-size concert venue and amphitheater. We believe the combination of a completely new and modern SoDo sports arena and the new Seattle Center Venues is vastly superior to a single, site-challenged sports venue at KeyArena.’’

Tim Leiweke and Irving Azoff are offering to renovate KeyArena for the NBA and NHL.

Clippers Create New Courtside Seats Selling For $175k Per Season

Sep 7, 2017 10:21 AM

The Los Angeles Clippers are creating eight additional courtside space for the 17-18 season by breaking up their long scorers table.

The Clippers aren't publicly disclosing the price, but a league source says they're asking for $175,000 a seat, which works out to $4,070 per game.

"It's extremely rare to have space like this open in any arena" Clippers president Gillian Zucker said. "What we did here was create new beachfront property."

The Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks have tickets that are more expensive.

"The seats can be seen on television, so it can be for someone who wants to be seen. It is, after all, Hollywood," Zucker said. "Companies, agencies or just a hard-core fan who wants to get closer."
