Grizzlies' Minority Owners Exercise Buy-Sell Provision

Nov 30, 2017 5:25 PM

Steve Kaplan and Daniel Straus exercised their buy-sell provision in their ownership agreement of the Memphis Grizzlies with Robert Pera.

Kaplan and Straus are minority owners with Pera the controlling owner.

Pera will have to decide whether to buy out Kaplan and/or Straus to keep control of the team or sell his shares at the set price and remove himself from the ownership group.

Pera was forced to bring on Kaplan and Straus after his Ubiquiti Networks tech company took a significant plunge. Pera's net worth has since recovered and more than doubled since purchasing the Grizzlies.

Pera is rarely in Memphis to attend games and his level of involvement with the franchise has drawn questions.

Sources say Pera's absentee approach has led to tension with minority owners.

Kaplan attempted to buy the Wolves from Glen Taylor but that deal fell through. Kaplan also was outbid for the Hawks in 2015.

Issues Between David Fizdale, Grizzlies Extended Beyond Current Season

Nov 30, 2017 3:00 PM

Several players on the Memphis Grizzlies reportedly didn't like David Fizdale as a coach as much as many outsiders assumed.

"The Grizzlies are like a Hollywood set," a person familiar with the team's dynamics told Bleacher Report. "A lot of facade and nothing behind it."

Fizdale pushed his longstanding disharmony with Marc Gasol into the public with his fourth quarter benching on Sunday. Fizdale was fired on Monday.

"What it came down to was, he wanted to win the battle: me or Marc Gasol?" the person told B/R. "Well, they let him know who."

The Grizzlies have an ownership situation that needs to be resolved and there has been frequent changes of their head coaches with first Lionel Hollins then Dave Joerger and now Fizdale.

"Gasol had been chafing for a long time," a person familiar with the player's thinking told B/R. "He had two pretty good coaches in Dave and Lionel, and he felt this guy was a little bit of a [phony]."

The issues with Fizdale reportedly extended beyond Gasol.

"It got really nasty," the person familiar with the team dynamics said. "It wasn't this week, and it wasn't just Gasol. This has been going on overlapping from last year, too."

Brandon Ingram 'Still Trying To Figure Out NBA Identity'

Nov 30, 2017 12:12 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are straddling the line between developing young players like Brandon Ingram while planning on pursuing multiple max free agents in the 2018 offseason.

Ingram is trying to stay focused on the present.

“I don’t think about it right now,” Ingram told USA TODAY Sports about who might come join them this summer. “I’m still trying to figure out who I am, still trying to figure out my identity and work hard and try to figure out who I’m going to be as a player in the NBA.

“We’re just trying to build with what we have right now. We know we have a young core that’s really talented, with good attitudes, good character, and that work hard every single day. I think talking with (Lakers president of basketball operations) Magic (Johnson) and (general manager) Rob (Pelinka) and (head coach) Luke (Walton), they’re up for the process, the process of what we’re building with all these young guys. We know that something bigger and better is going to come out of this.”

Ingram has frequently drawn comparison to Kevin Durant, who has become a mentor to him.

“I just saw myself (as) long, athletic, and could get to the rim (like Durant),” Ingram said. “He could shoot the ball. I used to shoot the ball a little bit, had the midrange game. He was one of the best scorers in college (at Texas). I watched him from Montrose Christian (High School), Oak Hill (High), everything.

“He tells me (that) if I need anything to talk to him. He’s always giving me advice, when I’ve been struggling coming into the preseason, and even last year. He’s just telling me to enjoy the process, to keep working, and keep building confidence every single day. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Dwyane Wade Comfortable With Transition From Star To Role Player

Nov 30, 2017 12:01 PM

Over the past few seasons, Dwyane Wade has reinvented himself from a high usage star to more of a complementary scorer.

LeBron James has been impressed with how Wade has handled his transition from star to role player.

“When you’re a star, a real big star and you’ve been a franchise player, guys have a hard time being real with themselves,” James said. “It’s crazy to me that one of my best friends is just real with the whole situation.”

Wade is averaging 10.8 points per game this season, down from 16.2 last season with the Bulls.

“I’m not in my 15th year like LeBron is in his 15th year,” Wade said. “Even though you can arguably say we’re both in the Hall of Fame when our careers are over, I’m not in the same place he’s at, so I’m not going to walk in here like I want to play 40 minutes a night, I want the ball 90 times a game. I don’t want that. My body can’t take that. I’ve been through a lot body-wise. But I know what I can do. I know what I can give you and that’s what I try to focus on. And I’m man enough to say that and be OK with that.”

Wade's arrival bothered some members of the Cavaliers and eventually led to the release of Richard Jefferson.

“I still know what he’s capable of doing. Why wouldn’t you want another guy in the locker room that brings a championship mentality and a guy who can still play?” James said. “So, of course, it bothered me, but (expletive) it. It is what it is.”

“They had a style here. I don’t fit the style from what they played over the last couple years,” Wade said. “But this is a different team.”

Russell Westbrook: I Take Ownership Of Everything That's Going On

Nov 30, 2017 11:41 AM

The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to struggle and Russell Westbrook is taking responsibility for their issues.

“I just hate losing, man,” Westbrook said. “One thing I hate with a passion is losing and I know that a lot of that is on me. Every night I go out and try to leave everything I have on the floor, knowing that if we don't succeed, I know I missed something to make sure we put ourselves in position to win the game.

“I haven't been doing that. We haven't been winning. Regardless of numbers and all that, it doesn't really matter. You've gotta win games in this league to make an impact and that's the most important part to me is finding ways to get wins.”

Following their loss to the Magic, Westbrook lingered near Oklahoma City's bench before eventually returning to the locker room.

“It just started with a sense of urgency, man,” Westbrook said. “And that starts with me. It's my responsibility to make sure we're ready to play, we're ready to play on both sides of the ball.

“To get us out of this funk, we've gotta lock in. I take ownership of everything that's going on because I've been here and those standards that we set here in Oklahoma City I have to set them, and set examples. It starts with me and we're gonna turn this thing around.”

Dion Waiters Found Knicks Appealing In Free Agency

Nov 30, 2017 11:09 AM

The New York Knicks had interest in Dion Waiters in free agency but he ultimately decided to re-sign with the Miami Heat. Waiters signed a four-year, $52 million deal to stay with the Heat.

Waiters met with Steve Mills during the offseason.

"They were talking, they were trying,’’ Waiters told The Post. "My agent was talking to them more than I was."

The Knicks eventually moved on to sign Tim Hardaway Jr.

"It was close to home and it’s New York, too," Waiters said. “It wouldn’t have been bad. It’s New York, the Garden. I went to Syracuse, man. So it’s like cool."

GM: Grizzlies Have No Plans To Trade Marc Gasol, Mike Conley

Nov 30, 2017 10:45 AM

The Memphis Grizzlies have no plans to trade Marc Gasol or Mike Conley.

"We have no intention to trade Marc," Chris Wallace told ESPN. "We never seriously considered that at all. We never placed any calls to any teams in that regard. So that's not happening.

"It's not just Marc that this whole equation is about. It's also Mike Conley, when he comes back. We've got two guys among the elite in the league at their respective positions that are still very much in their window with an awful lot of tread left on their tires."

The Grizzlies have been on a losing streak and fired David Fizdale this week.

Wallace remains optimistic that the Grizzlies can compete for a playoff berth this season.

"We're full speed ahead," Wallace said. "We've been in the playoffs seven years in a row. We've got a team when fully healthy and we get everything together is more athletic, more versatile and more potent offensively than we've had for a number of years. Even though the going has been a little difficult early, there's still 62 [games] to play. We believe in this team. We're hoping -- got our fingers crossed -- that we'll get everybody healthy soon.

"Our expectation always is to be a playoff team and have a chance to do some things when we get in there. We're behind in the standings right now, but it's a long way to go. When we get our guys back, I think we'll surge."
