NBA Expected To Start Next Season In January At Earliest

Sep 22, 2020 12:44 PM

The NBA previously announced they won't start the 20-21 season before Christmas Day after originally planning on starting on December 1st, but Adam Silver revealed on Tuesday that the next season will begin in January at the earliest.

Silver reiterated that the NBA's goal for 20-21 is to play a standard 82-game season.

The NBA is finishing the 19-20 season playing at a single site campus in Orlando, but that is not expected to be repeated for next season.

Lakers/Nuggets Game 2 Down 36 Percent From Game 1 Competing Against NFL

Sep 22, 2020 11:22 AM

The NBA drew 4.921 million viewers for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets on Friday evening, while that number dropped to 3.170 million for Game 2 airing on Sunday evening against NBC's coverage of the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots (17.689 million viewers), according to data from ShowBuzzDaily. The drop competing against the NFL on Sunday evening represents a 36 percent decrease.

Sports Media Watch reports that Game 2 was the least watched Conference Finals game since the Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets in 2003.

The NBA's drop competing against the NFL on Thursday, however, wasn't as dramatic.

ESPN drew 4.008 million viewers for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, 3.479 million for Game 2 on Thursday, and 3.810 million for Game 3 on Saturday. Game 2 competed against Thursday Night Football with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals drawing 6.676 million viewers with the NBA taking a 13.3 decrease.

Game 7 between the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets last Tuesday was the highest rated NBA telecast of the week with 5.226 million viewers.

For the 2019 Western Conference Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Portland Trail Blazers, the first three games each had more than seven million viewers. In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors drew 5.5 million viewers for Game 1, 4.4 million viewers for Game 2 and 6.2 million viewers for Game 3.

TV ratings for sports individually are down across the board with the packed fall schedule.

Michael Jordan Partners With Denny Hamlin On NASCAR Team, Bubba Wallace Announced As Driver

Sep 22, 2020 1:19 AM

Michael Jordan will partner with Denny Hamlin to start a new NASCAR race car team, with Bubba Wallace announced as the team's first driver.

"The opportunity to own my own racing team in partnership with my friend, Denny Hamlin, and to have Bubba Wallace driving for us, is very exciting for me. Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few Black owners. The timing seemed perfect as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more. In addition to the recent commitment and donations I have made to combat systemic racism, I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for Black people in racing," released Jordan in a statement.

Hamlin, a season-ticket holder of courtside seats to the Hornets, is a three-time Daytona 500 winner.

The team will feature a single-car Toyota entry aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing.

"Eleven years ago I met Michael Jordan at a then-Charlotte Bobcats game and we became fast friends. Not long after, I joined Jordan Brand as their first NASCAR athlete. Our friendship has grown over the years and now we are ready to take it to the next level. Deciding on the driver was easy -- it had to be Bubba Wallace," wrote Hamlin.
