Wallace: Randolph Deal Dead For Now

Sep 24, 2008 12:51 PM

The Grizzlies' efforts to land a power forward, first Josh Smith and then Zach Randolph, have come up empty, but GM Chris Wallace isn't panicking.

"Things start opening up a little more after teams get into the preseason schedule and teams get more of a barometer of what they actually have," Wallace said.

"We don't have a perfectly proportioned team right now in terms of the roster. We still have needs.

"We're in a talent-acquisition mode until we get to where we're a powerhouse team. When you're in a talent-acquisition mode there are going to be times when you have too many guards, too many centers or whatever. But that's part of the process in acquiring talent."

Wallace said any potential Randolph deal is dead.

"It's not going to happen at this point in time," Wallace said. "I never rule out the future. Who knows where all parties go down the road? But right now, I don't expect anything to happen."

Sep 20, 2008 11:29 PM

Lakers' executive Mitch Kupchak claims that the Grizzlies were looking to acquire Sun Yue in a trade, according to NBA.com.

"Memphis also wanted Sun in the trade, but we wanted to keep at least one of those two guys so Memphis wanted Marc [Gasol], and we are happy that we were able to keep Sun Yue, because we liked him when we drafted him," Kupchak said.

The Lakers drafted Sun with the fortieth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.

Will Knicks Be Stuck With Randolph?

Sep 20, 2008 4:57 PM

Now that the Grizzles are no longer interested in Zach Randolph, the Knicks could have a difficult time finding another suitor, according to Newsday.

Only three teams - Denver, Golden State and Sacramento - are in need of a post presence as training camps start opening at the end of the month.

The Nuggets could offer Kenyon Martin in a one-for-one swap, the Warriors could give up Al Harrington and another midlevel player and all the Kings have to trade are unwanted contracts.

Walsh: Randolph Trade Talks Not Active

Sep 10, 2008 12:10 AM

Donnie Walsh told the New York Times that talks with the Memphis Grizzlies about a trade for Zach Randolph have been dormant for weeks.

"There was a discussion about different formats, and it never got anywhere," Walsh said Monday.

"It was a conversation I had with these guys a month ago," Walsh said.  "We haven't talked recently. For some reason, it was in the Memphis press and everyone in New York acts like it's imminent."

Asked if a trade with the Grizzlies is still possible, Walsh said, "I can't say anything is over," but he said no proposal is on the table.

It may therefore be likely that the Knicks will not make any major roster changes before training camp opens in October.  "I'll be fine with that," Walsh said.  "I want to see a lot of the players play and see what it would take to come together as a team. But that doesn't mean that I won't be talking for the next three weeks."
