Calderon Would Prefer To Sign With Lakers If Amnestied

Jun 30, 2012 7:27 PM

The Lakers are considered the favorites to sign Jose Calderon if he is amnestied by the Raptors to sign Steve Nash, according to sources.

Calderon would have to clear waivers through the amnesty process before he is free to choose his next team.

But if he does become a free agent, Calderon would then look to sign with the Lakers.

Sources say Calderon would also have interest in joining Luis Scola wherever he ends up if he is traded.

The Heat and Spurs are also intriguing to Calderon.

Kupchak Will Continue To Pursue Trades, Looking To Hit 'Home Run'

Jun 29, 2012 10:33 AM

Mitch Kupchak said he would continue to pursue trades during the offseason.

"We'll try to hit a home run,” he said. “The draft is the beginning of the offseason. You continue to pursue trade possibilities and then (Saturday), you pursue trades and free agency."

Kupchak believes the Lakers can still contend for the title.

"I think if this group is kept intact, and we've got some work to do with existing free agents, I don't see why we can't be in the hunt next year," he said. "All you want in this league is a chance to be in the hunt. If you're one of five or six teams at the end of the year that have that feeling, that, 'Yeah, we can do this. We're playing our best basketball.' That's all you can hope for."

"That's important," Kupchak said. "Normally nothing is determined. But it's a sign you have some interest."

Lakers Tried To Trade Into First Round For Sullinger Or Perry Jones

Jun 29, 2012 3:19 AM

The Lakers made several attempts to move into the first round in Thursday's draft, targeting both Jared Sullinger and Perry Jones III.

Both players fell further than many anticipated and were selected by the Celtics and Thunder respectively.

"To get into the first round, it's not that easy to do without pledging substantial assets," Mitch Kupchak said. "To some degree, it was a challenge to look for something that was fair to do."

The Cavaliers owned the Lakers' first round pick, which was used on Jared Cunningham in a prearranged trade with Dallas. Jones would have been picked by the Lakers had they retained it.

The Lakers are not amongst the teams interested in signing Brandon Roy, according to a source.

Los Angeles is skeptical Roy will consistently stay healthy and using a slot on him would prove too risky when they have so many other depth issues already.
