Mark Cuban: Play-In Tournament 'An Enormous Mistake'

Apr 13, 2021 12:55 PM

Mark Cuban joined in with his franchise player, Luka Doncic, in criticizing the NBA's play-in tournament plan.

"I get why the NBA is doing it," Cuban said in a series of messages to ESPN. "But if we are going to be creative because of COVID, we should go straight up 1-20 and let the bottom 4 play in. This is the year particularly to do it since the 10 games cut [from the normal 82-game schedule] were in conference.

"The worst part of this approach is that it doubles the stress of the compressed schedule. Rather than playing for a playoff spot and being able to rest players as the standings become clearer, teams have to approach every game as a playoff game to either get into or stay in the top 6 since the consequences, as Luka said, are enormous. So players are playing more games and more minutes in fewer days."

Cuban voted for the play-in tournament for this season, which passed unanimously.

"In hindsight, this approach was an enormous mistake," Cuban told ESPN.

Pelicans Don't Plan To Sign Isaiah Thomas To 2nd 10-Day Contract

Apr 13, 2021 8:45 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans do not have immediate plans to sign Isaiah Thomas to a second 10-day contract. Thomas played in three games with New Orleans, averaging 7.7 points.

Thomas could be signed at a later date.

New Orleans has two weeks before it needs to add another player to the roster.

"I haven't run into a veteran guy more grateful for an opportunity to play in the league in my entire time in the league. He's been unbelievable here," Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy said after Monday's game. "To see him go in, even for a few minutes, make a shot, get the appreciation of the fans, I hope he heard it. A lot of times you don't when you're out there playing. I hope he heard it. I hope he enjoyed it. Because he certainly deserved it.

"I feel privileged that I've gotten the opportunity to coach him even for a very short amount of time."

The NBA rescheduled Monday's game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Brooklyn Nets for Tuesday afternoon.

Warriors To Consider Signing Extra Center

Apr 13, 2021 1:12 PM

The Golden State Warriors may sign a center before the end of the season.

Marquese Chriss suffered a season-ending injury during the first week of the season while James Wiseman was recently lost to a torn meniscus.

Kevon Looney has consistently dealt with injuries during his career.

"We're obviously very thin in the front court," Kerr said. "That's obviously something that we will be looking at as we go forward and once we get word on what James' prognosis is."

Luka Doncic Says He Doesn't 'See The Point' Of Play-In Game

Apr 13, 2021 1:00 AM

Luka Doncic said he doesn't "see the point" of the play-in game, adding that the concept undermines an entire season's work.

"I don't understand the idea of a play-in. You play 72 games to get into the playoffs, then maybe you lose two in a row and you're out of the playoffs. So I don't see the point of that," said Doncic.

The Mavs, who lost to the Sixers on Monday night, are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference. They would play the Grizzlies should the season end today.

Doncic added that his goal is to not have to deal with the play-in game in the first place.

"We're just trying to get to the sixth spot. I think that's our goal right now. Maybe even [higher] than the sixth spot."

James Wiseman, Warriors Still Evaluating Options On Meniscus

Apr 13, 2021 1:10 PM

The Golden State Warriors and James Wiseman are still evaluating their options for his meniscus injury.

Steve Kerr was non-committal when asked Monday whether Wiseman's season was over.

"I don't know that," Kerr said before the Warriors hosted the Denver Nuggets. "We are in the process of getting multiple opinions. He had an MRI and so we're having multiple experts look at the MRI to determine what's next. We don't have any timetable yet. The biggest thing is making sure James is OK. He's obviously had a lot of adversity this rookie season, with the wrist injury, now the knee injury and of course missing training camp, not having a summer league. He's really gutted through a lot of difficulty. ... And so this is yet another obstacle that's been put in front of him."

Kerr said Wiseman is trying to stay positive despite the latest setback.

"He's in really good spirits," Kerr said. "He's just been through an awful lot this season. And he has a really good way about him and he's at minimum putting up a good front, but I know he's really crushed, but he's hanging in there."

Murray suffered the injury with under a minute left in the fourth quarter of the Nuggets loss to the Warriors.
