Dad Says Son Is OK, But JR Smith No-Show At Event

Jun 30, 2007 6:05 AM

J.R Smith's left shoulder is fine, but the Nuggets guard hasn't played basketball since he was involved in a June 9 car accident, his father, Earl Smith Sr., said Friday.

Smith walked away from the accident with an injured left shoulder, but his best friend was killed.

Smith, 21, didn't show Friday morning at Lakewood Country Club for the J.R. Smith Youth Foundation Golf Outing, which helps provide academic scholarships. The tournament was the first benefit golf event for Smith's foundation.

Although Smith was a no- show, his father arrived at 7:30 a.m. and spoke on behalf of his son. Smith's mother, Ida Smith, also was in attendance.

"Physically, he's fine," the elder Smith said.

Camby Wants To Stay In Denver

Jun 26, 2007 3:44 AM

Marcus Camby's agent, Rick Kaplan, said he has heard all the wild trade rumors surrounding his client that have included Indiana, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington and the Los Angeles Lakers. Kaplan, however, doesn't believe Camby will get dealt and said his client wants to remain a Nugget.

"It would really surprise me if Marcus was traded. From everything the team is saying publicly, that's not a likely option," Kaplan said. "It makes little sense to trade Marcus. While he is the most tradable commodity, he might be their most important or second most important player at a decent price. Marcus is probably their best value.

"He really doesn't want to be traded."

Najera Chooses To Remain With Denver

Jun 26, 2007 3:42 AM

After much deliberation, forward Eduardo Najera has decided to stay with the Nuggets.

Najera said Monday that he has decided not to opt out of the final year of his contract that pays $4.95 million next season. Mexico's lone NBA player said the deadline for his decision is Saturday and that his decision came after talking with his wife, Amy.

Najera averaged 6.6 points and 4.1 rebounds last season.

"I have a few more days, but I don't plan on opting out," Najera said in a phone interview. "Right now, I haven't changed my mind. I felt like opting out sometimes. Sometimes I say, 'Forget it.' But I talked to my wife and we decided not to opt out."

Nuggets Willing To Trade Camby?

Jun 24, 2007 7:34 PM

Teams are actively trying to pry big men Nene and Marcus Camby away from Denver, according to NBA sources.

Nene, who averaged 15 points and nearly eight rebounds per game against San Antonio in the playoffs, is not going anywhere.

But the Nuggets are patiently, calmly waiting for a trade partner to make an offer they cannot refuse for Camby.

Najera Expected To Pass On International Tourney

Jun 21, 2007 6:50 AM

Unlike some of his Nuggets teammates, Eduardo Najera is not expected to play international basketball this summer.

Najera's personal manager, Roberto Gonzalez, said that unless something dramatically changes with the leadership of the Mexican Basketball Federation, Najera, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, isn't expected to play for his country during the FIBA Americas Championships in Las Vegas this summer.

"They need order," Gonzalez said Wednesday. "The Federation has been corrupt for 12 years. They need order so basketball can grow in Mexico."

Nuggets Looking To Get Into The Draft

Jun 18, 2007 4:49 AM

The Nuggets do not have a pick in the June 28 NBA draft, but team officials say there remains a chance that could change.

"We're open for business," Rex Chapman, the Nuggets' vice president of player personnel, said Sunday. "There's plenty of conversations."

The Nuggets, who would have had four selections in this year's draft, find themselves without any because of two trades - the J.R. Smith trade last summer and the Allen Iverson trade in December.

Judge Says 50 Cent Won't Have To Testify At Iverson Trial

Jun 15, 2007 2:31 PM

Rapper 50 Cent will not have to testify at NBA star Allen Iverson's assault trial this month, a federal judge ruled Friday.

The lawsuit stems from a fight between members of Iverson's security detail and patrons at a downtown Washington bar in 2005. Two customers sued, accusing Iverson of hitting one of them with a bottle and charging the entourage with assault, conspiracy and other charges.

One of the rap industry's most lucrative entertainers, 50 Cent ? whose real name is Curtis Jackson III ? was not involved in the fight. But lawyers for the customers said the rapper knew some of Iverson's security detail and could testify at trial about their behavior.

"They worked together on previous occasions," attorney Gregory L. Lattimer said Friday.

Union Reaches Out To J.R. Smith

Jun 14, 2007 4:22 AM

Like the Nuggets, the National Basketball Players Association has tried to be supportive for Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, whose car accident Saturday led to the death of his friend Andre Bell. Smith escaped with minor injuries.

NBPA executive director Billy Hunter said Wednesday he spoke to Smith's father, Earl, via telephone to extend the organization's support. Hunter didn't seem concerned that J.R. Smith's contract, which pays $2.1 million in the final year next season with Denver, was in jeopardy.

"(Earl) said that J.R. was in reasonably good shape and he would hopefully fully recover from the accident," Hunter said. "I've reached out to his dad to let him know I was available, the union's available. Any way we can help him, we'd gladly do it.

"He's obviously covered by insurance. He has his contract. I can't think of any other ancillary issues that have arisen at this moment."
