Nuggets Set To Sign Jelani McCoy

Sep 28, 2007 5:23 AM

Center Jelani McCoy, a seven- year NBA veteran, said he will sign a non-guaranteed deal with the Denver Nuggets, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Nuggets big men Kenyon Martin, recovering from right knee surgery, and Nene, nursing a bruised right calf, will be slowed when camp starts Tuesday. That could give McCoy ample court time.

"I'm sure it will, and, hopefully, I can show them something," said McCoy, who has a 4.7 career scoring average.

Nene OK; No Date For Return

Sep 5, 2007 6:09 AM

Nuggets forward Nene suffered a nasty-looking calf injury Saturday at the FIBA Americas Olympic qualifying tournament. He was wheeled off the court during the first quarter of a semifinal against Argentina. It was later diagnosed as a calf strain, and a somber-looking Nene was wheeled to a team bus.

According to Nuggets trainer Jim Gillen, there is still no timetable for when the Nuggets top post player will return to the court.

Brazilian Great Schmidt Criticizes Play Of Nene, Barbosa

Sep 2, 2007 11:16 PM

Former Brazilian basketball great Oscar Schmidt criticized NBA stars Nene and Leandro Barbosa after Brazil's poor performance at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

Brazil lost to Argentina 91-80 Saturday in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas qualifier and failed to earn one of the two berths for next year's Beijing Olympics up for grabs at the tournament.

"Nene should have worked harder," Oscar told the local SporTV channel Saturday. "He stayed around in Rio during the Pan American Games only to gain weight. The same thing happened with Leandro."

Nene, of the Denver Nuggets, and Barbosa, of the Phoenix Suns, skipped Brazil's winning campaign at the PanAm Games in July.

Nene Injures Right Calf

Sep 2, 2007 9:13 AM

Nuggets' forward Nene suffered a right calf strain in Brazil's semifinal loss to Argentina. While the extent of the damage isn't known, a Brazilian team doctor said through a spokesman that the injury was "bad" and estimated he could be out four to six weeks. If correct, it could keep Nene out of the first weeks of training camp, which starts in early October. All of this will be clearer once Nuggets doctors examine Nene, who is expected to be in Denver on Monday.

Nene was among the last to leave the locker room after the game and did so in a wheelchair. He said he was not sure how long he would be out. When asked how he felt, he said, "Not very good."
