Yao: Rockets Save Celebration For 2nd Round

Mar 31, 2009 4:50 PM

The Rockets clinched a playoff spot on Sunday night when the Suns lost to the Kings, but center Yao Ming isn't overly excited.

"I didn't do anything (to celebrate)," Yao said Monday. "I found out this morning. You think to make the playoffs is a big celebration for us. No. We'll save that."

Houston hasn't reached the second round of the postseason since 1997, a streak they'd like to erase.

"Everybody knows," Yao said of the team's goal. "Second round. At least."

Artest Now An Asset To Dogs

Mar 26, 2009 6:32 PM

Animal control officers were called to Ron Artest?s home in Sacramento two years ago.

When officers arrived at Artest?s house, they found a female Great Dane underweight and sick. They seized his dog and accused Artest of animal neglect. The dog was placed with a local veterinarian. It took a month for the dog to regain its proper weight and strength.

Charges were never filed. Artest claimed that he hired people to come to his house and care for the dog, and it wasn?t his fault that they never showed up. He did agree to let another family adopt the Great Dane, though.

This was not the only time that animal control officers seized animals from Artest?s home. It happened three times before. Each time, the dogs were removed, nourished back to health and placed with new owners.

Monday night, Artest will host a fundraiser for the Houston Humane Society at Capone?s Restaurant and Bar.

Artest also recently filmed a public service announcement for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. In the spot, Artest urges people to spay and neuter their pets.

?I was an irresponsible pet owner, and I got in some trouble,? Artest said after a practice last week at Toyota Center. ?PETA came and showed me how to be a better pet owner. A lot of times, it?s a simple thing. One of my problems was that the fence around my home wasn?t safe enough. I had a lot of dogs, and they kept getting out. The thing is, just because you?re irresponsible, it doesn?t mean you don?t love your pets. I loved my dogs. You just need to be more mature and accountable for how you treat your animals. I had to be educated.?

"I could have been dead," Landry said. "The shooter was 10 yards or less away. I?m 6-9 and I had a bright shirt on. I don?t know how he missed, but thank God he did and he hit the lower part of my leg. Yeah, definitely, I could have been dead. And you guys ? would be talking about the funeral that you were probably going to go to in a couple of days. I?m blessed and lucky to be alive."

Rockets React To Landry's Shooting Incident

Mar 18, 2009 9:24 AM

Houston forward Carl Landry was shot in the lower leg early Tuesday morning and is expected to miss two weeks of action.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, forward Shane Battier and guard Aaron Books were interviewed on KILT in Houston about the incident.

"Well I think it's frightening for anybody," Morey said. "Everyone who knows Carl, that's why the city loves him ... he's such a happy, upbeat guy. And that's one thing that stood out to me, just how frightened he was and obviously happy. That's one of those situations where everyone takes stock in their situation."

Battier said that the team isn't worried about Landry getting back on the court right now.

"We're going to miss him the next two weeks, his energy. His punch off the bench has been outstanding," Battier said. "But it's ironic that other guys will get the chance to step in now, much like he had a chance to step in and give us a lift last year. We're not worried about Carl from a basketball stand point. That's the least of our worries. We just want him to get healthy and deal with this episode."

Brooks says that athletes need to continue to be more careful than regular citizens went out.

"We are high profile and you want to keep your guard up around certain things. But some things, there's nothing you can do about it. There's just some things you have no control over," Brooks said.

Landry Shot In Lower Leg

Mar 17, 2009 10:59 AM

Carl Landry, power forward for the Houston Rockets, suffered a gunshot wound to his lower leg early Tuesday morning in a possible drive-by shooting or failed robbery near downtown, police said.

Landry was released after treatment at Memorial Hermann Hospital. A team spokesman said he suffered a flesh wound and is expected to be out of the lineup for one to two weeks.

The incident happened in the 3100 block of Leeland, a short distance southeast of downtown, about 4:20 a.m., Houston police said in a preliminary report.

The team's charter flight landed at Hobby Airport shortly after midnight following their win on Monday in New Orleans, according to a team spokesman.

According to police, Landry was driving when another vehicle bumped his car. He got out to inspect the damage and two shots were fired from the other vehicle as it slowly passed him, team officials said.

The second shot struck Landry.
