As a team, we are excited. It's going to be a different expectation for us, and we're just looking forward to taking it on."

Quincy Pondexter Wants To Play Battier-Like Role For Grizzlies

Oct 14, 2012 12:51 PM

Quincy Pondexter sees himself developing into a player like Shane Battier or Bruce Bowen, one who puts a priority on containing the other team's top scorer.

"I want to stay focused on the details of what our team needs me to do — whether it's guarding a Kobe (Bryant) and don't let him catch it in certain spots or the same against Kevin Durant," Pondexter said. "I just want to be that player that's really solid defensively on the perimeter, similar to Shane Battier and how he guards people. He's not really getting many steals but he's always there bugging people. You know, like a Bruce Bowen."

Lionel Hollins said Pondexter possesses attributes that make for a good utility player.

"Utility players are guys that go out and do whatever is necessary. He'll do that," Hollins said. "We just need him to be consistent guarding people. It may be shooting guards. It may be small forwards. He's got to be ready to defend. He's a bigger guy and we need that."

Pondexter spent the offseason working to improve his outside shot.

"My reputation was being a complete non-shooter. But I've done so many things to work on my game to play at this level," said Pondexter, who shot 67 percent from the floor in last year’s playoffs. "I'm shooting it better because of the repetition. I'm one of the hardest-working people in the gym. I'm not going to tweet about it. But I'm in the gym more than anyone else."

Rudy Gay Using Olympic Snub As Motivation

Oct 2, 2012 11:37 PM

Rudy Gay plans to use his cut from the U.S. Olympic team as motivation this season.

"They can word it however they want. Being left off, being cut, whatever," Gay said. "I feel like that's one of the things I can keep in my mind to make me move on."

Gay spent the summer working to get better.

"I feel like I've gotten older and gotten smarter as a player. Watched a lot of tape to try to figure out what holes I have in my game and try to fix that," Gay said. "It's hard."

Gay said he worked on trying to be consistent -- whether knocking down shots or coming off pick and rolls.

"I think I can give so much more, whether that's defense or offense," Gay said. "I feel like I can give so much more and I will."

Zach Randolph's Knee Feels 100 Percent, Improves Physique

Oct 2, 2012 10:07 AM

Zach Randolph's knee is feeling much improved from last season when he was limited to 28 games.

"My knee is 100 percent," Randolph said, "and I feel good. It's a new season. I'm turning the page."

Randolph began his offseason work in August in order to allow his knee to heal to a point where he had no pain.

"Man, working out has made me feel better," Randolph said. "I know that I can do what I used to do. … I expect big things from myself."

Randolph has also improved his physique with strength conditioning.

"We've got a more confident Z-Bo, a healthier Z-Bo and that's scary for a lot of teams," guard Tony Allen said. "I'm just glad he's on my team."

"I expect to have a deal before the season is over," Hollins said. "For sure."
