Hollins, Randolph Shrug Off Rumors Of Friction

Mar 29, 2013 11:06 AM

There is a growing belief that Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins and forward Zach Randolph aren't on the same page, but both men dispelled the notion on Thursday.

"Our relationship is fine," Randolph said. "I respect my coach."

The Grizzlies fell behind by 30 points in a loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday, during which the opposing broadcasters suggested there was a riff between Hollins and Randolph.

"The only beef I had with Zach is he was excessively late for a shootaround that started at 4:30 p.m. (last Saturday)," Hollins said. "I told him I can't start you and he understood. Everybody's got their opinion about what goes on in our locker room. But only the people in there know. I haven't had a beef with Zach and he hasn't had one with me."

Hollins said any correlation between Randolph's recent poor performances and their relationship is off base because there are basketball reasons why Randolph has struggled lately.

"We're getting him the ball," Hollins said. "If you watch the games, we're getting him the ball. It's just now teams are taking him away. They're running three people at him and he's making passes. Other people are having to step up and try to do things. It's just the way it is."

Mar 27, 2013 6:48 PM

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed Keyon Dooling for the rest of the season, according to a report.

Dooling is eligible for the playoffs after sitting out most of this season following an announced retirement last offseason.

Dooling, 32, had been serving as a coordinator with the Boston Celtics. He averaged four points for the Celtics last season.

Source: Raptors Likely To Offer Extension To Rudy Gay

Mar 6, 2013 6:51 PM

Rudy Gay disagrees with the Memphis Grizzlies' new ownership's decision to trade him.

"You have to give me a chance to see if I'm worth that," Gay told Yahoo! Sports.

Gay anticipated a possible trade when Robert Pera assumed ownership of the Grizzlies.

"With [new management], I don't think anybody's comfortable," Gay said. "They're rookie owners. They come in there and they want it their own way, and you can't blame them for that. But it's a player's league."

A source says the Raptors will likely offer a contract extension to Gay in the offseason.

"I needed a change," Gay said of the trade. "I needed a new situation. A new task. I needed a new task with something I could grasp, something I could take over. I need to be challenged. I was challenged in Memphis, but it was tug of war at times. Here I'm being challenged and they're seeing what I'm made of."

The Raptors are 7-8 since Gay was acquired.

"Last time I left it up to my agent and it worked for me," Gay said about a possible extension with the Raptors. "I love the city. I think the team has a lot of potential. The organization is great. [Bryan Colangelo] is here and he is watching every step trying to make this team better."

Hollinger: Grizzlies Have No Immediate Plans To Install SportVU Cameras

Mar 1, 2013 10:29 PM

John Hollinger indicated the Memphis Grizzlies have no immediate plans to install SportVU, a next-generation scouting system already implemented in half of the NBA's arenas.

SportVU uses six cameras to collect positioning data of every player on the court and produces real-time statistics well beyond the traditional box score.

Hollinger described the technology as a potential game-changer in the analytics arms race, but the seemingly infinite pool of data makes him wary of its immediate utility.

“It’s such a revolution that it presents its own challenges,” he said. “The biggest issue is the tsunami of data that they are going to unleash. There’s a lot of great information in there, somewhere, but the ability to process it — that’s the challenge.”

Hollinger said that he has had little opportunity to work with the players who are currently on the team, because he showed up in the middle of the season and was initially focused on player transactions.

“It was a little hard to jump in and start making demands or whatever,” he said. “So I think our approach has probably been a little cautious. There hasn’t been a lot of opportunity to implement deep analytic concepts at this point.”
