Brother Of Mike Budenholzer Died During Bucks' First Round Series Against Heat

Apr 28, 2023 11:35 PM

Mike Budenholzer was dealing with a family tragedy during the Milwaukee Bucks first round series against the Miami Heat.

One of Budenholzer's three brothers died just before Game 4, according to The Athletic. The brother died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.

Budenolzer is the youngest of seven children.

Budenholzer did not disclose the family tragedy during the series and it came to light during a media availability with Darvin Ham. Ham was a longtime assistant coach under Budenholzer.

“Coach Bud is going through a lot on a personal level,” Ham said, when asked about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s reaction to losing the series. “He just lost his brother, so, my apologies Bud if I wasn’t supposed to let anybody know. He and I’ve been texting. I love those guys.”

Mike Budenholzer's Future As Head Coach With Bucks 'Shaky'

Apr 28, 2023 11:45 AM

The Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated from the playoffs by the Miami Heat in the first round after just five games. The Bucks blew significant fourth quarter leads in both Games 4 and 5.

"I'm told Mike Budenholzer's status with the Bucks is shaky after the team's five-game loss to the Heat," wrote Shams Charania. "A lack of coaching adjustments, especially defensively, seems to be the main reason for the uncertainty."

Zach Lowe of ESPN previously reported that league insiders were "extremely skeptical" Budenholzer would be brought back next season.

Budenholzer has two seasons and $16 million remaining on his contract.

Windhorst: Giannis Antetokounmpo 'Unlikely' To Extend With Bucks This Offseason

Apr 27, 2023 4:02 PM

Giannis Antetokounmpo becomes eligible for a contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks this September and he could elect to wait before committing long-term again to the franchise. Antetokounmpo can add two more seasons on his deal for approximately $113 million.

Antetokounmpo signed a supermax extension with the Bucks in 2020 following their trade for Jrue Holiday.

This offseason, the Bucks also have critical decisions to make with the free agencies of Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez.

"I think it is unlikely Giannis extends his contract this summer," said Brian Windhorst. "He does have two years left, but with everything that's going on with the team and considering there's new ownership that makes it very difficult.

"And the Bucks are heading into the repeater tax. This is what happens to teams who are contenders year after year and they spend. Everything on this team is about to get more expensive. Plus, we have new rules coming in that is going to limit the way they can improve this roster moving forward. They are a late stage contender with a superstar in his 20s.

"There are teams in this league watching very closely to see what happens with the Bucks this summer."

League Insiders 'Extremely Skeptical' Bucks Will Keep Mike Budenholzer As Head Coach

Apr 27, 2023 3:45 PM

The status of Mike Budenholzer as head coach of Milwaukee Bucks was uncertain during the second round of the 2021 playoffs when they were on the brink of elimination by the Brooklyn Nets, but they went on to win that series and then the championship. Budenholzer kept his job and signed an extension, but a disappointing first round exit by the Bucks against the Miami Heat is bringing those questions back into focus.

Budenholzer's coaching during the fourth quarter of both their Game 4 and Game 5 losses has received particular scrutiny.

"There's some losses for which there's just no going back," said Zach Lowe on his podcast. "You cannot come back the same team. And the Bucks cannot come back the same team from this. I don't know how it will go...

"League insiders, you don't really have to be an insider, but league insiders are extremely skeptical that Mike Budenholzer can return as head coach of the Bucks after this. He has, according to [Adrian Wojnarowski], his last extension which happened after they won the title runs through the 24-25 season, so he has two years left. I just don't see any coming back from it. It's just logic.

"I think the league insiders are going to be right. I just don't see any other way."

Budenholzer has been head coach of the Bucks since 2018.

The Bucks face a critical offseason in which Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez will be free agents, while Giannis Antetokounmpo becomes extension eligible in September.

Giannis Antetokounmpo: Heat Played To Beat Us, We Were Playing To Win Championship

Apr 27, 2023 10:03 AM

Giannis Antetokounmpo was introspective following the Milwaukee Bucks season coming to an end in five games against the Miami Heat. Asked what happened to cause his Bucks to fall to the Heat in the first round, Antetokounmpo was candid in his response.

"They were playing to beat us and we were playing to win a championship", Antetokounmpo said. "We were a little bit ahead of ourselves, to be honest."

Antetokounmpo went on to say he doesn't consider the season to be a failure.

“It’s not a failure,” he said. “It’s steps towards success. There’s always steps to it. Michael Jordan played 15 years. He won six championships. The other nine years, he was a failure? (No.) So why do you ask me that question? It’s the wrong question.

“There’s no failure in sports. There’s good days, bad days. Some days you’re able to be successful. Some days you’re not. Some days it’s your turn. Some days it’s not your turn. And that’s what sports is about. You don’t always win. Some other people are going to win. And this year, somebody else is going to win. Simple as that.

“We’re going to come back next year, try to be better, try to build good habits, try to play better. Not have a 10-day stretch of playing bad basketball. And hopefully we can win a championship. So, for 50 years, from 1971 until we won in 2021, that we didn’t win a championship, it was 50 years of failure? No, it was not. There was steps to it. And we were able to win one. Hopefully we can win another one.”
