Pelicans May Not Be Able To Afford To Hire Tyronn Lue

Aug 25, 2020 5:37 PM

Tyronn Lue would like to be a head coach in the NBA again and there are at least three prominent openings in which he's been linked as a candidate in the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans and Brooklyn Nets.

Sources tell The Athletic that Lue could also be a candidate for the Houston Rockets should they move on from Mike D'Antoni.

Lue was looking for five years at $7 million per year from the Los Angeles Lakers, a deal commensurate with having won a title, but the closest they’d get was three years and $20 million.

League sources say the Pelicans are likely to cap their budget for a head coach at $5.5 million per season.

Ty Lue has emerged as a candidate for head coaching positions with the Brooklyn Nets, New Orleans Pelicans, Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Rockets. The 76ers and Rockets have yet to make a decision on their head coaches for the 20-21 season, while the Nets will consider retaining Jacque Vaughn.

Lue turned down an offer to become head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers last offseason as he was only offered a three-year deal.

Lue instead agreed to become assistant coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lue could bring Chauncey Billups as an associate head coach.

Aug 13, 2020 11:34 PM

Zion Williamson acknowledged he needs to improve both his game and body this offseason.

"I'll talk to my coaches and see what I need to do better from their point of view," Williamson said Thursday morning. "Talk to my player development coaches as well, see what I need to do better from their point of view. Just work on every part of my game and work on getting my body where it needs to be."

When asked just where he felt he needed his body to be, Williamson said, "That's a conversation I'll have with my team. We'll sit down, see what they need me to do better, then I can give you a better answer to that."

Williamson's weight and conditioning were a conversation as the restart began.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion," Williamson said. "But I'm going to stick to the opinions of the people closest to me and my team and just go from there."

Kings, Pelicans Eliminated From Contention, Play-In Game For Western Conference Playoff Spot Guaranteed

Aug 9, 2020 10:56 PM

The Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans were officially eliminated from playoff contention after both teams lost on Sunday.

The Rockets beat the Kings 129-112, with the Kings failing to make the playoffs for 14 consecutive seasons.

The Pelicans lost to the Spurs 122-113, with Zion Williamson calling out his team's lack of energy.

"That lack of spirit in the first half really dictates the second half. If we came out better, maybe we would've had a different outcome. You just have to learn from that experience and be better," said Williamson following the loss.

The Grizzlies' 108-99 loss to the Raptors also guaranteed a play-in game for the final seed in the Western Conference.

The Grizzlies currently have a 62% chance of getting the 8th seed, according to ESPN's BPI Playoff Odds.

"I'm not worried about no play-in game right now," said Ja Morant following the loss.
