Calderon Activated On Friday

Mar 31, 2006 8:47 PM

The Toronto Raptors activated point guard Jose Calderon from the inactive list prior to their game against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

The 6-foot-3 rookie had missed the previous eight games with left Achilles' tendinitis.

"I feel great," said Calderon, who isn't sure how much he will play against the Suns. "I feel 100 percent. I'm ready to play."

Bosh Likely Out For Season

Mar 29, 2006 6:01 AM

Chris Bosh won't even consider playing a basketball game for more than a week and there is every reason to think the Raptor all-star's season is over, the Toronto Star is reporting.

Bosh's sprained left thumb is more seriously injured than originally thought and the chance exists that the team will have to go through the final 12 games of the regular season without him.

"It's tough but safety's the main concern," Bosh said yesterday. "I talked to the doctors (Monday) and they're telling me if the same thing happens again if I play, it could be very severe."

It was originally suggested Bosh had mildly sprained his thumb after a freak collision with teammate Pape Sow during the first quarter of Sunday's game in Milwaukee.

But after seeing a Toronto hand specialist Monday, the risk of further damage is too great to ignore.

"Rather 10 days than 10 weeks or something like that," said Bosh.

All-Star forward Chris Bosh is out indefinitely with a sprained left thumb, leaving the Raptors without their top scorer and rebounder.

He was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday's loss in Milwaukee, colliding with teammate Pape Sow after chasing down a loose ball. He left for the locker room, then returned to the sidelines with his thumb wrapped.

Villanueva Takes A Shot At Stephen A. Smith

Mar 28, 2006 12:58 PM

"Without a doubt it was a statement game," Charlie Villanueva said about his 48-point performance.

"I was actually planning on sending my boxscore to ESPN."

The joke was a dig at ESPN talking head Stephen A. Smith, who loudly mocked the seventh overall selection of Villanueva by then general manager Rob Babcock.

Minus Bosh, Rookie Villaneuva Has Night Out

Mar 27, 2006 7:25 AM

Toronto rookie Charlie Villaneuva continues to silence the draft night critics with his solid play, going one step further in a career night last night in Milwaukee against the Bucks.

With Chris Bosh out of the game after suffering a mild thumb sprain, Villaneuva put the Raptors on his shoulders, exploding for 48 points, single-handedly keeping Toronto in a game it would eventually lose 125-116 in overtime to the Bucks.

"I've been in that zone before but to do it at this level is an even better feeling," Villanueva said after Toronto lost for the eighth time in nine overtime games this season.

"But the most important thing is a win; it hurts, especially on a special night like this for me."

Sigh Of Relief Over Bosh Thumb Sprain

Mar 27, 2006 7:20 AM

The Toronto Raptors received a sigh of relief last night after the thumb injury suffered by star forward Chris Bosh revealed that it wasn't as serious as it could have been, the Toronto Star is reporting.

Bosh was hit on the thumb by teammate Pape Sow trying to corral a loose ball in the first minutes of the game in Milwaukee and was in obvious pain when he came to bench during a timeout.

Taped by trainer Gregg Spratt, Bosh went to the locker room at the end of the quarter and had x-rays which turned out to be negative.  The thumb has been diagnosed as a mild sprain.

"It's pretty sore right now," Bosh said after the game. "I like to give it a night's rest and see how it feels."

Nets May Add Davis

Mar 25, 2006 1:16 PM

Rod Thorn said he and his staff haven't had any deep discussions about Antonio Davis, who was waived by Toronto. But he added they might consider picking up the 37-year-old vet -- back problem and all -- after he clears waivers; and that Tractor Traylor remains an option in the offseason.

Raptors Waive Antonio Davis

Mar 23, 2006 6:12 PM

The Toronto Raptors waived Antonio Davis on Thursday, effectively ending a season in which the center was suspended for five games for climbing into the stands after his wife got into a confrontation with a fan in Chicago.

Davis missed the past 12 games after injuring his back in the third quarter of a game against Miami on Feb. 27. He appeared in eight games with Toronto averaging 4.4 points and 4.5 rebounds in 23.9 minutes.

"After receiving a second opinion on Antonio's lingering back problems, it is very unlikely that he would return to competitive action this season with the Raptors," said Bryan Colangelo, the team's president and general manager. "After lengthy discussions with Antonio regarding his physical condition and his general sense of disappointment over his personally difficult year, we have concluded that it's in the best interest of both the organization and Antonio Davis to simply release him at this late point of the season."
