Austin Daye agreed to sign with the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, but he also received interest from the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers.

Daye was the No. 15 overall pick in 2009 by the Detroit Pistons after two seasons at Gonzaga.

Daye was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies last January.

Dwane Casey plans to change the Toronto Raptors’ offense to get Jonas Valanciunas involved more.

“That’s part of the offense that will change quite a bit because he has developed into the type of player that we can go to on a consistent basis far more than we did last year,” Casey said.

“He’s done a good job this summer not only scoring out of the low post, but of reading defenses, understanding when to pass, when to score, when to attack.

“He’s going to get his big portion of the offence run through him, around him, not only just to score out of the low post, but to quarterback.”

Valanciunas had a strong showing at the Las Vegas summer league, winning MVP honors on averages of 18.8 points on 56.1 percent shooting along with 10.0 rebounds.

The Toronto Raptors have hired assistant coaches Bill Bayno and Jesse Mermuys to their coaching staff.

Bayno spent the last two seasons as an assistant under Rick Adelman in Minnesota.

Mermuys was an assistant coach and director of player development for the Rockets this past season. In addition, the team promoted Jama Mahlalela to assistant coach after two seasons spent as director of player development.

“One profile we were going for is player development … Bill Bayno is one of the best in the league as far as player development,” Dwane Casey said during a conference call Thursday. “He did an excellent job working with guys, and developing players …

“Jesse did a good job not only in Denver, but working with James Harden in Houston. [And] Jama is one of the best player-relations, player-development guys that we have. I saw that. He was working in the front office … but he was also on the court with us in my two seasons in Toronto. I’ve seen the talent he has for teaching guys.”

Jonas Valanciunas has been named MVP of the 2013 Vegas Summer League.

Valanciunas averaged 18.8 points and 10.0 rebounds over four games for the Toronto Raptors.

Blake Griffin, John Wall, Jerryd Bayless, Nate Robinson, Josh Selby, Damian Lillard and Randy Foye have previously been named Summer League MVP.

Dwight Buycks has a multi-year contract with the Toronto Raptors, but he is committed to playing with the same urgency that finally won him an NBA deal.

"I still have a small room for error," said Buycks. "I still have to come in here and try to do better than what I did in Orlando, and what I did the past season, to try to come in and fit in with these guys quick. There's definitely a couple of guys who are on the roster for the Raptors, and it's important for them guys to get my trust here. That's real important coming into training camp, and get ready to be with the real guys that's been in the league for years now."

Jonas Valanciunas had a very strong performance over his four Summer League games, averaging 20 points and 9.3 rebounds.

Valanciunas and the Toronto Raptors decided to end his run after suffering a sprained finger.

"It's not about me, it's about team," Valanciunas said. "Our team, playing together, learning how to play together. It was Quincy [Acy], it was Terence [Ross], it was Dwight [Buycks]. We had a chance together as a team to prepare for the season. I think it was a great time."

Valanciunas spent 10 days in Las Vegas working with new assistant coaches Bill Bayno and Nick Nurse.

"He can take us to the next level, without a doubt," DeMar DeRozan said Saturday. "The league, when you have a dominant big, like he could potentially be, it will show you what good teams really are. With myself on the team, and we have Rudy (Gay), and we have a point guard like Kyle (Lowry), if we have a center like Jonas stepping up at a young age, that could do a lot for us, man."

The Phoenix Suns defeated the Toronto Raptors by a final score of 103-98 in Summer League play on Saturday.

Marcus Morris had 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting and six rebounds to lead the Suns.

Quincy Acy had 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Dwight Buycks had 28 points.

The Toronto Raptors are planning on shutting down Jonas Valanciunas for the remainder of Summer League.

Valanciunas has averaged 18.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game in 29.1 minutes.

The Toronto Raptors defeated the Denver Nuggets by a final score of 95-78 in Summer League play on Thursday.

Dwight Buycks had 18 points, six rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Raptors. Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, while Terrence Ross had 17 points and eight rebounds.

Jordan Hamilton scored 25 points on 10-for-21 shooting. Quincy Miller had 10 points and seven rebounds.
