Agents, Other Teams 'Livid' Over How Ja Morant Situation Reflects On NBA

May 17, 2023 3:48 PM

The NBA could receive pressure from some agents and other teams to issue serious consequences to Ja Morant for again appearing on social media waving a firearm. Morant was suspended eight games in March and met with Adam Silver before returning to the Memphis Grizzlies.

"I'm curious what stance [the players association] might take," said Tim MacMahon on the Basketball Illuminati podcast. "I've talked to agents of other superstar players and they're pissed off too. Because this is not just a bad look for Ja Morant. This is not just a bad look for the Memphis Grizzlies. This reflects poorly on the entire league.

"I'm talking to an agent of another superstar and he's like 'Man, this really taints the image of the whole league. I've got my clients who are doing everything right, who are never sniffing any kind of trouble. Positive members of their community. So on and so forth, but then the perception is going to be 'Look at this fool who thinks playing with guns on Instagram Live is cool.''

"So the players' association thing will be interesting because it's not just the league office, it's not just the Memphis Grizzlies. Other teams are livid about this and other agents are livid about this because they feel it reflects poorly on everybody."

Adam Silver 'Shocked' By Ja Morant Holding Gun In Social Media Video Again

May 16, 2023 9:14 PM

Adam Silver said he was "shocked" when he saw a social media video of Ja Morant holding a firearm less than two months after they met to discuss a similar incident. The NBA suspended Morant for eight games when he was holding a handgun at a Denver-area club during an Instagram Live session.

"Honestly, I was shocked when I saw this weekend that video," Silver told ESPN's Malika Andrews from the NBA's draft lottery Tuesday in Chicago. "Now, we're in the process of investigating it, and we'll figure out exactly what happened to the best we can. The video is a bit grainy and all that, but I'm assuming the worst."

Morant met with Silver after he spent time in a Florida counseling facility.

"We talked directly about the consequences first," Silver told ESPN on Tuesday. "Before we got to a subsequent potential to have done something wrong, we were very focused on the misconduct that was in front of us at the time. Frankly, most of our conversation was about how incredibly serious the first incident was of waving a firearm on social media.

"Again, the consequences there -- an eight-game suspension -- was pretty serious and something that he, at least to me, seemed to take incredibly seriously in that time. And we spoke for a long time about not just the consequences that could have on his career, but the safety issues around it -- [Morant] could've injured, maimed, killed himself, someone else with an act like that -- and also the acknowledgment that he's a star. He has an incredibly huge following, and [we discussed] my concern -- and I thought he shared with me -- that millions, if not tens of millions, of kids globally would have seen him do something that was celebrating in a way that act of using a firearm in that fashion.

"So I at least was left with the sense that he was taking this incredibly serious."

Ja Morant Allegedly Spotted Holding Gun In Live Video Again

May 14, 2023 9:04 AM

Ja Morant was allegedly spotted on an Instagram Live video holding a gun. Morant appeared to be in a car with friends when he held up a gun while the video was streaming live.

Morant missed nine games in early- to mid-March after brandishing a gun in a video filmed in a Denver area nightclub. Morant was ultimately suspended for eight games total by NBA, while being given credit for the first five games he sat out.

In an interview with ESPN after being suspended, Morant said he made a "terrible mistake" and promised to be accountable for his actions moving forward.

“It’s not who I am,” Morant said. “I don’t condone any type of violence but I take full responsibility for my actions. I made a bad mistake, and I can see that image I painted over myself with my recent mistakes, but in the future, I’ll make sure everybody knows who Ja really is, and what I’m about and change this narrative.”

Dillon Brooks Will Receive 'Some Interest' In Free Agency

May 3, 2023 11:55 AM

Dillon Brooks will not return to the Memphis Grizzlies next season, but he will have a market elsewhere. The Grizzlies informed Brooks that they are not interested in pursuing him in free agency under any circumstances.

Brooks turned down an extension offer from the Grizzlies early in the season and he has interest in a bigger offensive role.

"An early look around at his market does indicate there will be some interest in his services around the league," writes Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Brooks is coming off a three-year, $35 million extension he signed with the Grizzlies in 2020.

Grizzlies Inform Dillon Brooks They're Not Interested In Re-Signing Him

May 2, 2023 12:10 PM

The Memphis Grizzlies have informed Dillon Brooks they are not interested in re-signing him in free agency under any circumstances, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic

Brooks was informed of the Grizzlies' position during his exit meeting.

Brooks’ first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers was considered to be a breaking point. Brooks called LeBron James "old" and "tired" after Game 2, then punched him in the groin area in Game 3. Brooks also chose not to speak to the media after three of the losses in the series, resulting in a $25,000 fine by the NBA.

Brooks also struggled on offense during the series.

The Grizzlies made contract extension offers to Brooks early in the season, but those were rejected, sources tell Charania.

At the trade deadline, the Grizzlies pursued trades for both Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.
