Cavaliers Acquire Jiri Welsch

Feb 24, 2005 1:22 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired guard/forward Jiri Welsch from the Boston Celtics, Cavaliers President and General Manager of Basketball Operations Jim Paxson announced today.  The Cavaliers will send their first round pick in 2007 to Boston (protected for the top ten picks).  To complete the transaction, Cleveland's first round pick in 2005, which is owed to Charlotte (via Phoenix), is now an unprotected pick (previously playoff protected).

Welsch, 25, has started 32 of 55 games for the Celtics this season, averaging 7.5 points on .427 shooting from the field and 2.5 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game. In 173 career games (100 starts), Welsch is averaging 7.1 points on .415 shooting from the field, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Last season the Czech Republic native averaged career highs in every major statistical category.

"We've been interested in Jiri for some time now and we felt it was the right time to get him here," Paxson said.  "He is an aggressive, complete player that can impact offense and defense, so we look forward to his involvement on both ends of the court. Jiri has the talent needed to make a difference for us this season and we look forward to seeing him excel as a Cavalier."

Welsch, in his third season, is expected to join the team in Indiana in time for Friday's game against the Pacers (8:00 p.m. ET; ESPN/FSN Ohio).

In a related move, the Cavaliers have requested waivers on forward James Thomas.  He was signed to a 10-day contract on February 22.

The Cavaliers active roster now stands at 12.

T-Wolves Head Into All-Star Game With 2 Straight Wins Under McHale

Feb 18, 2005 2:06 AM

On Thursday night the Wolves showed their true colors in their 94-88 victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Once again, Wally Szczerbiak came off the bench and dominated with 26 points. This along with Garnett's 20 points and 18 boards was enough to get Minnesota their second win in a row. Just what they needed befrore going into the All-Star break.

While their on court chemistry was off and on during the night, Wolves fans saw that glimmer of greatness the team had last season, and could should regain after the coming break. In a post-game interview, coach Kevin McHale said, ``We can go through some dry spells on offense when you're kicking rear ends on defense. That's the way you have to play.'' Kicking rear ends is an understatment. The Wolves had a season high 14 blocked shots, and out-rebounded the Cavs by 10 boards.

The energy and intensity was a presence throughout the entire game, and Wolves fans are confident that that their team will continue to play well after the break. With Cassell likely to return shortly after All-Star weekend, the balance of playing time between him and Troy Hudson at point guard will greatly improve the T-Wolves' offensive threat. It's hard to imagine this deep, high-powered team not making the playoffs.

After the game, there was a plug for an interview between Georgetown Hoyas head coach John Thompson, and Kevin Garnett to be aired sometime during this All-star weekend. For those of you who witnessed this brief clip, clearly it is a must-see. For those of you who missed it, Thompson asks Garnett no BS questions, and gets him to speak from the heart. No media fluff, just real talk.

The Big Ticket outwardly showed his emotion when asked by Thompson "What is it that Drives you?" Garnett's powerful response, "I keep losing. I keep losing."
