Yao Might Retire If Foot Won't Fully Heal

Jul 27, 2010 1:39 PM

Rockets center Yao Ming will consider quitting basketball after the 2010-11 season if he doesn't fully recover from a lingering foot injury.

He sounded far from optimistic about his future in comments made to Chinese state media on Monday.

"If the foot injury does not heal next season, I might choose to call it quits," Yao said.

He is entering the final season of his current contract with Houston and recently became a father.

Yao missed last season following foot surgery.

Scola Would Have Considered Going To Toronto

Jul 22, 2010 7:55 AM

Rockets forward Luis Scola recently agreed to a five-year, $47 million deal to remain in Houston.

However, when his future was somewhat in doubt he says he would have considered agreeing to a sign-and-trade to Toronto had the Rockets been able to land Chris Bosh.

"I tried not to think about it," Scola said. "If you want to be in sign-and-trade, I would have to say yes.

"I wanted to play in the NBA. This contract guarantees I'm going to play in the NBA a lot more years, seven or eight years overall. I think that for me means a lot. I reached a goal. I knew Houston wanted me here. I knew it was going to be done somehow."

Rockets Optimistic On Yao; Morey Refutes Idea They'll Hold Him Out

Jul 20, 2010 9:07 AM

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle wrote on Monday that the Rockets' chances of making a deep playoff run still rest on the health of center Yao Ming.

Houston officials maintain that Yao is entirely on track to start training camp and the season on time.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said the rumored possibility of holding Yao out for the first two months of the season to be cautious is "totally false."

Scola Pondered Returning To Spain

Jul 16, 2010 11:54 AM

Luis Scola didn't anticipate all the waiting involved in free agency and admitted that he thought about weighing offers to return to Spain.

"I almost died," Scola said. "It was so stressful. If I didn't die of a heart attack this week, I think I'll never die. I never was a free agent before. I thought it would be less complicated.

"There were a couple days I didn't think it would work out. Waiting for an offer was really stressful. A couple times, I thought it wouldn't be the way I wanted. I would do what I had to do. I'm a professional. If I had to move, I would have moved. Sometimes that is not up to you. But it would be really hard to play for another team in the NBA not the Rockets."

Leading up to Thursday, when he reached a multiyear deal with Houston, Scola was so worried that he was warming to the idea of playing in Spain.

"I feel great. I feel great," Scola said. "I going to be the place I wanted to be. I'm so happy."

Rockets Looking For Third Point Guard

Jul 14, 2010 6:14 PM

The Rockets concluded their Summer League schedule on Wednesday and aside from sure-things Jordan Hill, Chase Budinger and Patrick Patterson, Daryl Morey told RealGM the team is looking for a third point guard behind Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry.

On Wednesday, Houston matched the offer sheet Lowry signed with Cleveland.

"I think we've got an opportunity for a third point guard. Ishmael Smith, Trevon Hughes, Blake Ahearn and Jermaine Taylor are really auditioning for that role," he said. "In training camp we'll probably have one of those guys and some other free agents we'll bring in as we look for a third point guard."

Morey Talks About Expectations Of Patterson

Jul 14, 2010 5:55 PM

Patrick Patterson has an impressive all-around skill set, but hasn't displayed excellence as either a perimeter player or banger in Las Vegas.

During Wednesday's Summer League game against the Nuggets he attempted a hook shot in the paint, while also drifting out onto the perimeter for a three-point try.

Generally, players with extended NBA careers who aren't stars excel in one specific area.

GM Daryl Morey talked with RealGM on Wednesday about what the Rockets are looking for out of Patterson.

"He's got an all-around game, but I think we?re looking for him to be more on the inside like he was during his early years at Kentucky," said Morey. "We like that he's versatile, you know he only moved to the perimeter when [DeMarcus] Cousins got there. We'd like him to be more of a player in the paint."

Rockets Match Lowry's Offer Sheet With Cleveland

Jul 14, 2010 5:49 PM

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey announced via his Twitter feed on Wednesday that the Rockets would be matching the four-year, $24 million offer the Cavaliers signed Lowry to on Tuesday night.

Houston had a week to consider matching the offer but barely took 12 hours.

According to a source, the Cavs attempted to work out a sign-and-trade offer for Lowry before presenting the offer sheet, but the Rockets declined to take part.
