J.R. Smith does not appear to be a good fit for the San Antonio Spurs on the surface, but he may be exactly what the team needs, Buck Harvey of the San Antonio Express-News is reporting.
The Spurs tried to acquire the high flying guard at the trade deadline in 2006 when Smith was with New Orleans, but the deal involving Brent Barry fell through at the last second.
Stephen Jackson previously had the same questionable character and was able to exist in the Spurs' environment, and has a championship to show for his efforts.
The drawback which may stop the Spurs calling Smith may be the Denver guard's defensive tendencies, which many consider to be non-existent at best.
The San Antonio Spurs are going green, according to a report in the San Antonio Express-News.

?As an organization, we are extremely excited about this, and it is only the first step,? Spurs' Chairman and CEO Peter Holt said in a statement.
?We are exploring recycling and water conservation ideas, as well,? Holt added. ?We really want to be a model for arenas across the country regarding sensitivity to the environment.?
Spurs' officials are worried that guard Manu Ginobili is planning on playing for Argentina in the upcoming Beijing Olympics, the Associated Press is reporting.
Ginobili is nursing a badly sprained ankle and told Argentine media Wednesday that doctors have told him the ankle injury was worse than he thought. He said he must immobilize the ankle for 3-4 weeks but that he still hopes to play for Argentina.

San Antonio Spurs' owner Peter Holt said Wednesday that he wanted to examine the entire structure of the Spurs Sports & Entertainment operation to see if improvements are possible, the San Antonio Express-News is reporting.
The process is designed to take about 30 days but could linger through August.
In the interim, Holt said he?d be more active in the day-to-day operations of the four-team sports enterprise, along with R.C. Buford, senior vice president and general manager of the Spurs; and Rick Pych, executive vice president for finance and corporate development.
He didn?t say organizational changes were likely because he said, the existing organization has been successful. But the timing is right to see if the entertainment company can benefit from the experiences of other successful franchises.
The San Antonio Spurs will not be adding 2007 draft pick Tiago Splitter to their team next season after the talented big man signed signed a new contract with Tau Ceramica through the 2011-12 season, the San Antonio Express-News is reporting.
The decision was purely economical, with Splitter's new deal worth several times the maximum amount the Spurs could offer because of the rookie scale.
Spurs' General Manager R.C. Buford said the team would address needs on its front line through other resources.
?We're excited Tiago is going to have an opportunity to continue to grow in a very good program,? Buford said Saturday. ?We'll approach the position through the resources we have and look forward to the opportunity to add him to our team at the earliest opportunity.?
Spurs' Assistant Coach Mike Budenholzer has finally landed his long-anticipated job interview with the Phoenix Suns, according to The San Antonio Express-News.
He flew to Arizona on Tuesday to meet with General Manager Steve Kerr and other team officials about the vacancy.
?There are only 30 of these jobs in the NBA to begin with,? Budenholzer said. ?Obviously, to meet with members of an organization as successful as this one ? it's pretty exciting. It's an opportunity a lot of people would like to have.?
Budenholzer, 38, has worked for the Spurs for 14 years, with 12 of them as an assistant.
This year the Western Conference Finals averaged a viewing audience of 4.2% of U.S. households, according to USA Today.
That number was up 25% from the six-game battle they broadcast last season.

The Spurs aren't likely to split up their core of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili this summer, according to The New York Daily News.
They have the mid-level exception to work with this offseaso, and will likely go after a young talent rather than someone like free-agent bust Damon Stoudamire.
