Thaddeus Young Wants To Play For Contender

Dec 17, 2021 9:14 AM

Thaddeus Young has been open in recent weeks that being a part of the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs isn't an ideal situation for him. Young doesn't get regular minutes, as the Spurs prioritize playing younger players. He understands the situation, but he's ready for a role on a contender.

“I don’t mind playing through rebuilds and stuff like that, but the one thing about it is I’m not getting any younger. I’m getting older and at some point, I want to start contending for championships," Young said. "I haven’t been in any situation where I’ve been able to contend for a championship. I want that feeling. I want that aspect of being able to go out there and being able to compete for a championship every single night. That’s the part that I really want to get to.”

In a wide-ranging interview with Yahoo Sports, Young talked about how hard it has been to be healthy but to not play for the first time in his career. Young has his eye on the trade deadline, but said if he's not dealt, a buyout could be a possibility.

Young is in the final season of his contract, with a $14.2 million salary. It's been expected that if the Spurs don't deal Young, a buyout may be possible. San Antonio has worked similar agreements with veterans in the past, including LaMarcus Aldridge last season.

Ben Simmons Would Welcome Trade To Spurs

Dec 9, 2021 9:41 PM

Ben Simmons hasn't publicly specified if he would prefer to play for any particular teams when he's traded by the Philadelphia 76ers, but the San Antonio Spurs appear to be on the list.

"I've heard that Ben Simmons would welcome the opportunity to play for Popovich if the Spurs found a way to acquire him," writes Marc Stein at Substack.

The Spurs have discussed a trade for Simmons with the 76ers, but they lack the type of star Daryl Morey is believed to be seeking.

Thaddeus Young: Right Now, Spurs Situation Not Ideal For Me

Dec 4, 2021 8:18 AM

Thaddeus Young has averaged nearly 30 minutes per game in his NBA career. This season, Young has seen his playing time cut in half. The veteran forward isn't happy about that situation either.

“Right now, this situation is not ideal for me,” Young said. “I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve had to settle for 4 and 6 minutes a game.”

Young said he understands the San Antonio Spurs are rebuilding, but he believes he can still contribute to a winning team.

“If I get a certain amount of minutes, then I’m able to be consistent. As consistent as I’ve been in (recent) years. So far this season, I haven’t really played as much as I’ve played in the past, but with the time that I have been given, I’ve been productive," said Young. "If I’m able to play a certain amount of minutes per game, then I feel like I can continue to be as consistent as I’ve been for years, and for many more years to come.”
