Cavaliers Exercise 22-23 Options On Darius Garland, Dylan Windler, Isaac Okoro

Oct 31, 2021 8:20 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have exercised the fourth-year (2022-23) contract options on Darius Garland and Dylan Windler and the third-year (2022-23) option on Isaac Okoro.

Garland (6-1, 186) was the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by Cleveland and owns career averages of 14.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 0.95 steals in 31.9 minutes over 117 career games (113 starts) with the team. Last season, the Vanderbilt product received three votes for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award after recording career highs in points (17.4), rebounds (2.4), assists (6.1, 18th in NBA), steals (1.22), minutes (33.1), field goal percentage (.451) and three-point percentage (.395). Additionally, Garland was one of only four players in the entire NBA to post at least 17.0 points, 6.0 assists, a .390 clip from three and a .840 mark from the foul line in 2020-21, joining Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving and Kyle Lowry. He became the quickest in franchise history to reach 200 career three-pointers (107 games), achieving that mark with his fourth trey in a win over Chicago on April 21. So far this season, Garland is handing out a career-best 9.0 assists per game, which ranks third in the NBA, while also averaging 14.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 30.8 minutes per contest.

Windler (6-6, 199) was selected as the 26th overall pick by the Cavaliers during the 2019 NBA Draft after a four-year career at Belmont. He has appeared in 34 career games with the Cavaliers, holding averages of 4.7 points and 3.1 rebounds in 15.2 minutes. Last season, he averaged 5.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 16.5 minutes over 31 games after missing his entire rookie campaign in 2019-20 due to a left lower leg stress reaction. From Dec. 23 to Feb. 24, Windler led the Cavs in three-point percentage at .418 (23-55) and had a stretch of nine consecutive three-pointers made without a miss (Feb. 23-24), becoming the first Cavs rookie to accomplish that feat in 20 years and was the longest by any Cavs player since Kyrie Irving in 2015.

Okoro (6-5, 225), the No. 5 pick by the Cavaliers out of Auburn in the 2020 NBA Draft, is averaging 9.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.90 steals in 32.1 minutes over 71 career games with the team. An NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection last season, Okoro (646 points, 62 three-pointers, 62 steals, 24 blocks) became just the third rookie in franchise history to record at least 500 points, 50 threes, 50 steals and 20 blocks in a single season, joining LeBron James (2003-04) and Kyrie Irving (2011-12).

76ers Exercise 22-23 Options On Matisse Thybulle, Tyrese Maxey

Oct 29, 2021 2:33 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have exercised the fourth-year contract option for Matisse Thybulle and the third-year contract option for Tyrese Maxey, both set to take effect for the 22-23 season.

Thybulle, who is in his third NBA season, was selected by Boston with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft before Philadelphia acquired his rights in a trade. For his career, Thybulle has appeared in 135 games (22 starts), tallying 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 19.9 minutes per game. Thybulle’s 209 career steals rank sixth in the NBA since his rookie season. Over his two-plus NBA seasons, Thybulle has 31 games with at least three steals, a mark that is tied for the third-most in the league during that span. Last season, he was the only player in the NBA to have at least 100 steals and 70 blocks in less than 1,300 minutes played.

Maxey, now in his second season, holds career averages of 8.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 16.7 minutes per contest in 63 games (13 starts). Maxey posted a career-high 39 points, along with seven rebounds and eight assists against Denver last season. At the time, Maxey was the first rookie since 2019 to post a 35-5-5 performance in a single game and became just the second 76er rookie to post such numbers in a game.

Hornets Offered Four-Year, $60M Extension To Miles Bridges

Oct 29, 2021 11:16 AM

The Charlotte Hornets and Miles Bridges were unable to agree to an extension prior to the deadline and he will become a restricted free agent in the offseason. Bridges has so far had a breakout season as one of the NBA's better young wings.

Mikal Bridges signed a four-year, $90 million extension with the Phoenix Suns.

"When he was in negotiations for his extensions a couple of weeks ago, I'm told the Hornets' baseline offer was four years, $60 million," said Brian Windhorst. "Which is $15 million per year. If you look at what Mikal Bridges, which we've compared him to during his career, got... which some people in the league feel is an overpay."

"I think he would have gotten it from somebody next summer," said Tim MacMahon.

"Obviously once that deal is signed, [Miles] cannot sign for $30 million less. We can debate on where they were."

Based on how Miles Bridges has played to start the season, he will be in line for a contract closer to what Mikal Bridges signed as opposed to Charlotte's extension offer.

Lonnie Walker 'More Excited, More Hungry' After Not Signing Extension With Spurs

Oct 26, 2021 8:52 PM

Lonnie Walker will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season after he was unable to agree to an extension with the San Antonio Spurs.

“I ain’t worried about the contract,” Walker said. “I think God willingly, I’ve got good karma, good energy around me. Things will turn out the way they are supposed to.”

The Spurs hope Walker has a breakout season.

“I think I’m more excited, more hungry. I’m starving more than ever,” Walker said. “I’m trying to stay active offensively and defensively and do what Pop (coach Gregg Popovich) wants me to do.”

Derrick White called Walker “ready to go” and “motivated.”

“He’s been the same every day, going in with a great attitude,” White said. “He had a great game last game (17 points in the 121-111 loss to the Bucks). We need him all year.”

Walker would like to remain with the Spurs.

“Absolutely. I think I’m a San Antonio, Texas, guy myself,” he said. “I had somebody call out to me at an H-E-B, ‘What’s up, (dude)?’ I thought, ‘I’m part of this community now.’”

Ja Morant: I'm Not A Big Fan On The Leaving

Oct 21, 2021 10:09 AM

Ja Morant is almost certain to sign a contract extension with the Memphis Grizzlies next offseason when they offer it to him.

“Me, I’m not a big fan on the leaving,” Morant said. “As long as I’m here, I’m here; that’s my focus. Regardless, I’m going to make the best of any situation, continue to just go out with my teammates, win games, play in front of our fans and do whatever I can to continue to bring love.”

Morant believes the Grizzlies have enough already to contend in the Western Conference.

“One hundred percent, no question,” he said.

After reaching the playoffs last season, the Jazz made a few significant roster move such as trading Jonas Valanciunas for Steven Adams.

“I feel like the talent was always there. We just have to piece it together, and a lot of credit goes to our front office and our coaching staff giving us the right pieces to be good as soon as we started,” Morant said. “My mindset when I was coming here was not being a lottery pick again unless we trading someone. I was coming here to win, and I was able to do that my first two years, basically making it my first year, making it my second … still not satisfied. I want to go farther. I want a championship.”

Bradley Beal Reveals He's Recruited By Opposing Players During 'Almost Every Game'

Oct 20, 2021 10:45 AM

While Bradley Beal has maintained that he plans to remain with the Washington Wizards, his situation continues to be monitored by team executives and opposing players.

Players even try to recruit him during games.

“Almost every game we play, someone says something,” Beal said.

Beal could leave the Wizards during the 2022 offseason or re-sign on a five-year, $242 million deal.

“It brings you back to college. Which school is the right school? Which team is the right team?” Beal says. “You love the fact that people see your game and would love to play with you. But it’s also tough on the back end, because you have no idea what you want to do.”

Tommy Shepherd replaced Ernie Grunfeld in 2019 and has remade the roster.

“All the things that we’ve talked about two years ago to now, he can judge on the actions, not on the words and promises,” Sheppard says. “We’re going into year three of a plan to be more competitive every year. It’s not a win now. It’s win more.”

“Shep played the hand he was dealt,” Beal said. “He had to clean up some things to shape it the way he wanted to and I’m definitely impressed with it. The way he made moves, he was able to save us without giving up crazy picks or assets to go get what we wanted.”
